MAIL; Important 12 Feb. 1845 printed 5-page leaflet (21x23cms.; folded to easily fit an album page) headed "MEMORIAL FROM The County of Orkney, adopted aT a public meeting held at Kirkwall, on 12th February 1845, relative to Improvements in the Pst Office Department of the county." giving a detailed plan for more flexible ship services for mails between the Orkney Islands and the mainland, complaining that the thrice-weekly plain sailing vessel across the Pentland Firth was woefully inadequate. Plus rare original 19 Oct. 1868 EL sent free to PO Surveyor in Edinburgh with "KIRKWALL" cds on the front from the Orkney Steam Navigation Co. (albino seal inside) quoting £80p.a. to run twice-weekly mails from Kirkwall to Stronsay, Sanday, Eday & Westray. They got the job. Important pair. (2 items)

SHETLAND ISLES & FAIR ISLE - LERWICK - EARLY STEP-TYPE "SHIP LETTER" + 1840s COVER TO SINGAPORE "RETURNED FOR POSTAGE"; Very fine 23 Jan. 1815 EL from "Lerwick" to Bannockburn charged "1/2" with mainly very fine rare boxed step-type "LERWICK/SHIP LETTER" nicely placed on the lower flap and Edinburgh transit d.s. on the front; an early example of this rare Ship Letter mark; plus April 1843 env. from "LERWICK" (boxed d.s. on reverse) to "Singapore" but with very fine London "RETURNED FOR/[3/6] Postage" marks (2 types) back & front, and signs that the original franking of (?) 6 1841 2d Blues had been reclaimed by the sender as the letter was never sent! Early OHMS mail to NZ like this is very rare, especially from Ireland.

IRELAND PRE-1922 - POSTAL HISTORY - RARE 1d PINK ENVELOPE WITH 2d GREEN DUNDALK, NEWRY & GREENORE RAILWAY LETTER STAMP; 12 July 1901 usage (apparently commercial) of the QV 1d Pink env. (minor wear and stained reverse) to the "G.P.O. Dublin" franked with DNGR 2d Green cancelled just tied by a manuscript "X" (a second "X" cancels the 1d Pink) with a large part strike "DUBLIN" cds nearby on the front. Rare cover with one of the most elusive Railway Letter stamps of Ireland.
