Click to view full image... POSTAL REFORMS - THE VERY RARE GIANT 1839 'MERCANTILE PAPERS' PROPAGANDA "SINGLE" LETTER-SHEET; April 1839 Mercantile Committee on Postage (M.C.P.) propaganda letter-sheet (folded to 345x200mm; neatly professionally silk-backed with minor infill) designed by Henry Cole (two 1838 designs and this 1839 design were produced by the M.C.P.) designed to be sent to VIPs in London, ideally as free letters. It has a partly printed address-panel:- "SPECIMEN OF POSTAGE CHARGES IN 1839./To be preserved among the curiosities of any Museum, &c./SINGLE LETTER,/UNDER ONE OUNCE IN WEIGHT./To be kept dry, or the Single Postage will at once be raised to Fourfold Postage./LONDON". The printed text inside (shown in reduced form in the illustration in this catalogue) notes that this single-sheet ("35 inches by 23 inches") will cost half as much postage as the miniature matching 2-sheet letter (not present) that weighed 1/60th as much! It also quotes two "ANOMALIES" - examples of crazy postal rates in various parts of Britain. It is recorded that only 1,500 of this giant 1839 design were printed, but only 4 or 5 now survive in private hands; even fewer of this giant sheet have survived than the matching tiny double letters. These unused examples came from the sets of 'Mercantile Papers' that were made up by Henry Cole for the dozen or so members of the Committee in 1839. An Important Postal Reforms Exhibition Item.
