"Penny Post" RATES) + UNIFORM 1d-POST INC. 6th MAY 1840 "PD1" + LATER "PD2" MARKS; Large blue ring-clip album containing a remarkable range of Dec. 1839 Brighton 4d-Post Period covers (6; inc. two with "Brighton/Penny Post" - charged "1" or "P4" - one "FREE", red m/s "P4" and two black m/s "4") plus a detailed study of the notoriously faint oval-framed Brighton "PD1" (34 in 5 types) and "PD2" (7 inc. some mainly v. fine) marks including several unusually clear strikes (rare thus) and one mainly very fine "PD1" in oval of 6 May 1840 on EL to Colchester. Plus a study of 1829-31 covers with Brighton cds's and a few fronts. Probably the most detailed study of Brighton 4d/UPP-Post covers ever formed. (90 items)

MARITIMO" and matching Lisbon "120" on the front but also with fair British Packet Office "LISBON" and unique (?) Manuscript "British 4s-4d/Port[uguese]. 8[d]/5/-" rate as well as rare FB "T.P/1803" on reverse; plus 1838 EL rom "HENLEY ON THAMES" (fine UDC) to London sent accidentally unsealed and so sealed with an 80% red wax seal with an impression of the London Inspector's "[Crown]", and a matching cover without the wax seal. MARY'S "SCILLY" MARK TO LONDON; 10 Mar. 1828 EL (folds neatly to display internal heading beside address-panel) from "George Nance" in "St. Martin's Island, Scilly" to S.P.C.K. in London charged "1/1" with a mainly fine St. Mary's "SCILLY" namestamp nicely placed on the top flap beside a fine red London arrival cds (21 Mar.); interesting contents requesting a small salary for the preacher on St. Martins and the inability of the islanders to pay for one. We have only recorded one earlier cover (1827) from this tiny island. Important Scilly Isles Exhibition Item. [Ex Cavendish Sept. 2011 auction, lot 777; realised £1,000.]

DERBYSHIRE - HOPTON/WIRKSWORTH - WILLIAM GELL, POET & FRIEND OF LORD BYRON - TRIO OF PERSONAL LETTERS; Sept./Oct./Nov. trio of ELs from Hopton Hall (Derbys.) to "Lady Charlotte Lindsay" (addressed in the letter as "Lindaraxa" in whimsical style, written and signed by William Gell (also a noted archaeologist and traveller) as "Anacharsis" (one being co-written by Keppel Richard Craven) inc. a small but clear sketch of the summer house he is building; one carried privately, the other two franked by "P. Gell" (William's father) with fair/fine "WIRKSWORTH/139" mileage marks (one redirected in London with "In all 5" charge. Most of this fascinating correspondence is in the British Library. (3 covers)

(flap opened to display backstamp) to Ilfracombe with 1d Red 'Stars' (one rounded corner perf.) tied by a very fine Distinctive triple-arcs "(((44)))" Tideswell Numeral with fine blue-green backstamp; we cannot recall having seen this "44" Numeral on a perforated 1d Red cover before - this may be the only recorded example, and may be the latest recorded date for this rare locally produced Numeral.

The latter was due to the addressee having previously been an M.P.; plus 1816 EL with fine mileages of both Chesterfield & Wirksworth, 1877 Duplex, 1893 Squared Circle on regd. env., etc. (7 covers/card)
