HEREFORDSHIRE - RARE 1d BLACK COVER WITH HEREFORD VILLAGE "Peterchurch/Penny Post" MARKING; Attractive/4 Aug. 1840 EL sent locally to Hereford with a fine Plate 1a 1d Black (RL; 4m but just shaved at top left) tied by an orange-red Hereford Maltese Cross (v. fine black "HEREFORD" cds alongside) but also having a partly fine rare "Peterchurch/Penny Post" mark alongside; fine village usage of a 1d Black. Penny Posts with 1d Blacks are very elusive.

ISLE OF WIGHT - THE EARLIEST RECORDED LETTER FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT WITH POSTAL MARKINGS; 31 Oct. 1674 EL (minor internal wear) to London headed from "Cowes on the Ile of Whit [sic]", addressed to "Morfelds nare the Popi's Head, London", charged "3" (above 80 miles journey), having a very fine "NO/2" London arrival Bishop Mark, with REVERSED "N" VARIETY, nicely placed on the side-flap. Very few 17th century letters have been recorded from the Isle of Wight, and this is the earliest that we have recorded with postal marks - we have only recorded one earlier letter at all, dated 1629. LETTER "PAID BY COACH"; Unusual trio of 1842/43 ELs all sent within the island from Shanklin to Wotton Bridge; one with fair 1d Red tied by MX (Newport cds backstamp), but the other two sent by private means (thereby flouting the P.O. monopoly); endorsed "Paid by coach to be Delivered immediately" or "To be Left at Mr. Rawdon's Library(?), Newport". Very rare proof that even after 1840 some people resorted to private letter-carrying systems. (3 covers)

Sodor & Mann"!) to Stamford via Liverpool with a mainly very fine "ISLE OF MAN" mark (similar to IM10 but with clearly different - not worn - lettering) on the top flap. An important recent addition to the record; it seems that IM10 & IM10a were both very short-lived marks (each only known in one year; 1822 or 1823). Free mail from the island is also rare.
