SHIP LETTERS - DARTMOUTH - UNIQUE(?) PAIR OF LETTERS ARRIVING SAME DAY EX N.S.W. WITH DIFFERENT SHIP LETTER TYPES; 6 Feb. + 6 Mar. 1826 pair of ELs (minor faults) from the same correspondence from Sydney to London (both about the first Australian lunatic, James Birnie, 1762-1844 - one from him and one from his wife who complains of his philandering etc.!); both with fair red 6 July 1826 London arrival cds's (1-ring or 2-ring) on the flaps, but having mainly very fine strikes of different black boxed Ship Letter marks - "SHIP LETTER/DARTMOUTH" & "DARTMOUTH/SHIP LETTER". It seems that more than one Ship Letter mark could be used where an extra large mail arrived; these letters are both thought to have been carried on the ship 'Lang' via Hobart. The only such pair with different types of Ship Letter marks landed at the same time from the pre-1840 period that we can recall having seen. Rare pair. T.P.O.'S AND STATION MARKS - THE VERY RARE PURPLE "NOT TO BE DELIVERED/BY APPARATUS" MARK ON COMPLETE DATED COVER; Small 26 Feb. 1898 PO OHMS small env. (small fault at foot and slightly blurred readdressing ink; stain on reverse) to the Postmaster of Lancaster (forwarded to Morecambe) but having a very fine very rare purple "NOT TO BE DELIVERED/BY APPARATUS" mark on the front, which was to prevent the fragile contents being thrown from a moving train into the special net used for transit mail bags. Only two other covers and one label have been recorded with this mark [which preceded the similar PO KEVII labels usually used on regd. mail]. [One of the other two covers - not dated - realised £253 in Cavendish's 'Harold Wilson' auction of Nov. 2005, lot 2263, and the other, 1901, cover - in Cavendish's Mar. 2016 Evans auction, lot 660 - realised £370.] The earliest known "Apparatus" cover.
