The rear with framed "INDIA LETTER/DEAL" and London c.d.s. Addressed to Captain D'Arcy Wentworth (junior, 1793-1861), the first Australian born to be commissioned as an officer in the British Army and a member of the first Legislative Council in New South Wales. The contents from his property agent in the colony concerning 3150 acres of land let at an annual rental of £284/5/-. Typed transcript included. £150

The face with the very rare "POST PAID SHIP LTR/SYDNEY/OC * 12/1837" (PHNSW SL1 - re-cut version only known used 12-14 Oct.) and rare "EXEMPT SHIP Lr" (smudged), apparently applied in error and deleted. The rear with framed "INDIA LETTER/GRAVESEND" and London c.d.s. Contents regard an account to the London Missionary Society. £220

  1844 WRECK COVER DISCOVERED IN 2012 AND PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED; 8 Nov. 1844 OHMS (scarce thus) EL (file folds and stains) "Per Thos. Lowry" Sydney to London (c.d.s on reverse), sent without colonial postage and rated "1/4"(d) double inwards charge. Routed via St Helena, the ship struck a sunken rock(s) upon arrival in Dartmouth when in charge of the pilot. Whilst the mails were recovered with little delay, the pilot committed suicide the next day. Previously thought that no example existed, now recorded by Peace (2012) possibly the only example extant. £360

LONDON TO QUEBEC WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER: 25 Mar. 1815 EL from London to Quebec with a fine double-circle "POST PAID WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER/[CROWN]/LONDON(date missing)/1815" (Rob. PPWSL1) in black on the reverse and a manuscript charge of "81/2" (Stg.) in red on the front. The handstamp was always struck over the flap to prevent other pages being added, with the result that the date is often unreadable.   POST '1812-14' WAR US POSTAL SURCHARGES ON ENGLAND TO MONTREAL LETTERS: 16 Aug. 1815, 15 Sep. 1815, 30 Oct. 1815 & 2 Jan. 1816 group of ELs sent by private ships from Liverpool to Montreal - all routed via New York and all charged "9" on delivery; the covers show a range of charges from "251/2", "30" to "60". The 50% surcharge was introduced on 1 Feb 1815 to assist in paying the costs of the war and removed on 31 Mar. 1816. (5 covers) £160
