CONN' circle & wave m/c & eye-witness letter ref. ships sinking from Henry Streeter in Conn. to his sister in Mass. 'I saw a terrible sight today....a pilot came aboard and shouted as we picked him up, 'For God's sake put on full steam and get up to Port Morriss as quick as you can. The General Slocum is afire with 2000 women and children aboard....you can imagine what a thrill of horror passes over everyone on board'... Plus later used PPCs of the General Slocum (4). The collection is arranged ship by ship commencing with the Commander in Chief & his flagship the 'Friedrich der Grosse', continuing with the Battleships, Cruisers & Torpedo Boats. Each ship has a page dedicated to it, often with both a PPC & a cover/feldpost card showing the Marine Schiffspost numbered cancel, in a variety of colours. The PPCs depict the relevant vessel or officer & include some real photo types, whilst the covers include items ex officers correspondence. Click to view full image... ** MARITIME - DISASTER: MONTE-CERVANTES: The pair of used/unused 11 July 1928/12 Mar 1929 Monte-Cervantes menu/PPCs, with 1928 menu/PPC from Geiranger to Berlin franked by a blk. of 1 ore grey (8), 3 ore. orange (3) & a 2 ore brown all tied by good c.d.s.'s (10). (23 Jan 1930, she struck an uncharted rock, all passengers & crew were taken off, except the captain who drowned when the ship slipped off the rock the following day. April 1937./Der Fuhrer und Reichskanzler' with Adolf Hitlers signature. Also a 18 Sept. letter to Schrader confirming a further appointment of Second Admiral of the North Sea (officially given Oct. 1st 1937). Plus a b/w photo of Hitler & Schrader.
