WORLDWIDE MILITARY POSTAL HISTORY

1262
"GEORGE R." [KING GEORGE I] SIGNED WARRANT AUTHORISING THE START OF THE WAR OF THE QUADRUPLE ALLIANCE; Original 7 Aug. 1718 foolscap manuscript document (professionally closed tears affect text but well clear of signatures) boldly signed by the King "George R" at the top beside a very fine embossed Royal wafer seal with pink ribbons and countersigned by J[ames]. Craggs [the Younger, 1686-1712, son of his namesake the PMG at the time]. This important historical document gave the King's personal authority for the finalising the "Treaty with the Emperor & French King" (filing note on reverse). This Treaty of the Quadruple Alliance gave the authority for the war between the 4 allies (GB, France, Germany & Austria) to prevent Spain's continuing expansion. A rare Royal autograph and a rare example of a document that started a major war. £300
1263
NAPOLEONIC WARS - LETTER FROM A BRITISH OFFICER AT THE COURT OF NAPOLEON ON ELBA: 1814 (11 May) EL sent by Colonel Campbell in Porto Ferrato to "H.M.S. Curacoa". Sent one month into the Emperor's exile. Faults, but an unusual item. [ex Bettini] £150
1264
BATTLE OF NAVARINO - PART EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT WITH "SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH"; [c.1 Nov.] 1827 E (side-flaps removed) from HMS Gannet to "George Rodney Mundy Esq." (1805-44; subsequently famous for his exploits in Labuan/Sarawak with Rajah Brooke against the indigenous tribes) in London charged "1/7" with a mainly fine framed step-type "SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH" and 9 Jan. 1828 London arrival c.d.s. on the flap. The contents reveal that the letter (of which only part remains after some fool cut away the flaps and inner sheet) was written by the future 3rd Baron Kensington while he was serving with Codrington's force; "...after coming out of Navarin with a whole skin...I find myself Acting Commander of H.M. Sloop Gannet. Lord Ingestre was sent to England with the dispatches [&] I was first on the Admiralty list...I cannot give any very clear account of the Action, first of all I was so frightened and secondly I was stationed on the lower deck where thanks to teak ships I was quite safe, but it was rather hot work for three or four hours and then they [the enemy ships] all blew up - recoil...". Fragmentary but fascinating. [Discovered by our describer in a postmarks collection!] £240

Orleans transit c.d.s. and small "SHIP" mark; the front is endorsed "334 Kearny" and it seems certain that this letter was sent by the famous Col. S.W. Kearny who won the 1846/48 Mexican-American War and 'conquered' California in 1847 before briefly (in early 1848) becoming Governor of Vera Cruz; plus fine privately carried 1872 EL (typed translation & transcription) from "Mexico" (firm's d.s.) to New York carried "by the service of the Consul General & Sr. Jorge".
