MATCHED PAIR OF COVERS WITH THE 1852-53 HOBART FREE MARKING; 21 Jan. 1853 env. and 12 Sep. 1853 E to the same addressee (John Leak, MLC) both with the 1852 Hobart FREE marking ('FREE' 19mm) the first to Perth and redirected to Campbell Town without any charges and signed at lower left by Lt. Governor William Denison, the other endorsed 'On Public Service only' and both with postmaster's private framed "CAMP TOWN/(DATE)" h.s. Good pair showing both free mail and the private postmaster's h.s (2 covers) PHOTO - see page 31. £280

ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF AN INLAND MILITARY CONCESSION RATE; 14 Sep. 1838 EL (with related 'promise to pay' document, possibly originally enclosed) Waterloo Point to Hobart, initially rated '6'(d) for an unpaid letter carried 45-75 miles and re-rated '1'(d) for a soldiers letter. The only example recorded of an internal military concession rate. Under the 1834 Act, the 1d rate applied to single sheets of paper if pre-paid. As pre-payment on all inland mail was optional at the time, this article was allowed to pass. Very important example of Australian colonial concessionary rate mail and a major exhibition item. Hobart Town crown datestamp on face and 'C R' (Caledonian Railway) h.s applied. The rear with London and Blairgowrie c.d.s. LAUNCESTON INWARDS SHIP LETTERS WITH INLAND ADDRESSES; 5 Nov. 1847 EL Portland, Port Phillip District (New South Wales) to Rosedale and rated '3'(d) outgoing ship letter rated and '5'(d) inwards charge (4d Launceston unpaid ship letter charge + 1d for inland delivery). Launceston double-lined c.d.s on reverse, 31 May. 1850 env. Morchard Bishop undated circular h.s (scarce Devon marking) to Launceston. Crediton and London crown ship letter c.d.s on face, rated '8'(d) ship letter rate and redirected to Bothwell on arrival, rated '1'(d) for this and a total of '5'(d) and Oct. 1851 E from London (no markings and hence another rare loose letter) to Rosedale carried 'per Arnon' landed at Launceston and rated '5'(d) (4d inwards ship letter charge + 1d inland delivery fee). The face with scarce framed postmaster's private "CAMP TOWN 18 Feb 52" h.s. on face and rear with Launceston c.d.s on reverse. Attractive examples (3 covers) PHOTO - see page 32. £320

(rear with Junior United Service Club insignia on flap) to Hobart without origin markings, rated '4'(d) inwards ship letter rate with Hobart framed "SHIP LETTER 1(numeral missing) FEB 14/1849'. Rare example of a loose ship letter, 23 Jun. 1853 env. (defective) Calcutta to Richmond, the rear with Launceston c.d.s and Hobart segmented circle datestamp on face. The earliest of the seven examples of mail from India to the colony in the pre-UPU period recorded by us and 14 Jan. 1856 E (Coutts & Co forwarding agents h.s on face) London (Paid MX datestamp on face) to Brighton, rated '8'(d) ship letter fee with '1d' accountancy h.s in red applied in London. ON INGOING COVER EX INDIA VIA TASMANIA; Fine 15 Oct. 1844 EL (family letter ref. trade etc.) from "Calcutta" endorsed (inside) as carried "P. [Ship] Tenasserina to Hobart Town" addressed to "Edward Crooke, New South Wales" (!) but also endorsed "Favour of Messrs. A.B. Smith & Co., Sydney" who redirected and posted the letter to "Gipps Land, Port Albert"; it is charged "4" (inland rate) with a fair crowned oval G.P.O./Sydney d.s. and a very fine oval "ALBERTON/[Crown]/NEW SOUTH WALES" d.s. on the top flap. SPECTACULAR FRANKING ON REGISTERED COVER TO THE ITALIAN STATES; 8 Sep. 1858 EL Hepburn to Intra, Sardinia extraordinarily franked imperf 3d Half-Length horiz. strip of five (ironed out crease), 1/- imperf Octagonal vert. strip of five and 1d Emblems (ironed out crease) all faintly cancelled BN '23' (rear of the adhesives with impressions of the manuscript text of the letter which have been lifted and hinged in approximately the correct place). With Hepburn, Melbourne, Alexandria, Malta, Turin and Intra backstamps. Unique rate and route avoiding the French postal system. The rate representing the 1/4-1/2 oz. combined postage, 6d GB ship letter rate plus 1/- registration fee. The earlier of two examples of registered mail to the Italian States recorded and arguably the most important example of Australian colonial registered mail. RARE THREE 'BLUES' FRANKING TO GB; 24 Dec 1860 EL (minor faults) Geelong to London franked 1/- Octagonal, 6d Queen-on-Throne & 3d Beaded Oval (scarce on cover) tied by either barred numeral '2' or London Paid c.d.s. Unusual three 'blues' franking of which two examples are recorded of this combination to represent the treble via Marseilles rate and struck with the bold "M." h.s accordingly. Attractive.
