BISTRITA (ROMANIA) 1937 CRASH COVER: The remains of a flown cover ex Moscow with 8 stamps/part stamps on reverse addressed to Bistrita and salvaged from the DC-2 USSR-M 2520 on 6th August. On arrival in Prague two 'ambulance stickers' showing "Postovni Ulonza" were added at the dead letter office. Sundry research notes and photographs accompany this survivor from a little documented aviation disaster. Possibly unique. PHOTO - see page 11. £100

SEA WATER DAMAGE GROUP; 1917 front from Australia bearing KGV 1d tied by Koruonup c.d.s and carried on the S.S.Karmala which was sustained submarine damage near Messina, with framed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION IN SEA WATER, I.S." very scarce with less than twenty examples believed to exist, 1918 env. from Field Post Office H21 (Jaffa) to London (redirected to Brighton) with two strikes of the framed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION/IN SEA WATER" (one on rear tying an official repair label to the cover) and 1918 env. from South Africa to England with rather clandestine "RECEIVED AT LIVERPOOL/DAMAGED BY SEAWATER" cachet carried on the S.S.Kenilworth Castle and repaired at right. (consistent faults, opened out) to Lisbon franked 6d mauve (wing margin at right) tied by London duplex with "DEFICIENT POSTAGE'6'/FINE '6'" and "320" reis due on arrival. Carried on the Samphire which collided with the Fanny Buck in the English Channel, leading to the loss of five lives. Illustrated by Hoggarth & Gwynn (2003) and the only example recorded by them. (stamps washed away) Philadelphia to London and 22 Jan. 1892 5c stationery env. to Frankfurt each with different cachets the first with the framed "Saved from wreck/of S.S "Eider"" applied in London and "Frankirter Brief aus/gestrandstem D.Eider geborg" (scarce) probably applied in Bremen. (fragile, flap missing, stamps washed away) Peckelsheim to NY (one full and one part c.d.s on reverse) carried on the Elbe which collided with the Crathie off the coast of Lowestoft. Returned to Bremen where struck with the framed bi-lingual "Frei! Marke abgefallen/Paid! Stamp lost." and "Geborgen aus der/Postladung des untergogangenerf/Dampers ,,Elbe"./Postamt 1 Bremen" h.s. (one flap missing, defective at base and stained) Valletta (?) to Cairo, multi-redirected within Cairo, Sudan and finally to Nettley Hospital in England. Rare part "Wet through coll[ission on the Nile]". Rare only 15 strikes on cover believed to exist and this a most unusual item addressed inwards and variously redirected. Large-part British "VRFOUND/OPEN AND/ OFFICIALLY/SEALED" on reverse. Very intriguing cover PHOTO - see page 12. £500

WRECK OF THE S.S.LIBAN; 4 Jun. 1903 printed advertisement postcard Tours to Bastia (Corsica), addressed paper wrapper attached with strike of the "NAUFRAGE du LIBAN" h.s on the face and Marseilles c.d.s on reverse after 13 bags of mail were recovered.
