'CONNAUGHT'; Fine 24 Sept. 1860 E to "St. Johns, Newfoundland" endorsed "Via Galway" with a GB 6d Lilac tied by a very fine "LONDON E.C/86" Duplex; rare example of a cover carried by this little-known route of the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co. This cover was carried by the S.S. 'Connaught' and was off-loaded at St. Johns, whereas the ship went on to New York but was sunk en route; the Connaught only made two Transatlantic crossings and only this one via St. Johns - on her other crossing she did not call at St. Johns. Mail via Galway" with a GB 6d Lilac tied by a very fine "LIVERPOOL/466" Duplex; rare example of a cover carried by this little-known route of the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co. This cover was carried by the S.S. 'Adriatic' that had been bought from the Collins Line in March 1861. PHOTO - see page 21. £200

(minor edge wear; slightly reduced at left) to "St. Johns, Newfoundland" endorsed "P [Ship] Anglia via Galway" with a GB Small Letters 6d Lilac tied by a very fine "BRISTOL/134" Sideways Duplex; rare example of a cover carried by this little-known route of the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co. This cover was carried by the S.S. 'Anglia' which struck a rock going out of Galway harbour, so the mails were re-routed to the S.S. 'Arabia' (Cunard) that left Liverpool on 14 Nov. and reached Halifax on 25 Nov. from where a feeder-service took the Newfoundland mail (including this cover) on to St. Johns on 30 Nov. (there is a very fine 30 Nov. "ST. JOHNS-NEWFOUNDLAND" double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse). Possibly Unique cover carried by both Galway & Cunard steamers. PHOTO - see page 2. £300

(with contents headed from "Baltimore") addressed to "Major Charles Marshall, c/o Major...Andrews...Richmond, Va." having no postal marks but with the original paper 'pocket' still in place for a dime to pay the Confederate postage once taken across the River Potomac, originally having had a dime coin inside; the letter - family news etc. - asks the addressee to forward an enclosed letter "if possible" too. Fine example of this rare technique for getting mail smuggled from one side of the conflict to the other. U.S.A. - SCARCE 2c 'BLACK JACK' SINGLE FRANKING PRINTED CIRCULARS TO NEW BRUNSWICK; 14/15 Apr. 1866 EL (complete printed Boston lumber merchant's Prices Current list) to Miramichi with US 2c 'Black Jack' tied by two "BOSTON" target-duplexes with a very fine St. John Handstruck "1c" on the front and a mainly very fine "NEWCASTLE/N.B" double-arc arrival c.d.s. on the top flap. Plus two similar 18 Oct. 1865/8 Mar. 1866 pair of similar printed ELs with single 'Black Jacks' tied by Boston Duplexes, but each with blue crayon "1" instead of the St. John h.s. "1c" mark.
