EARLIEST EXAMPLE OF A POSTAL MARKING FROM THE COLONY; 9 Nov. 1822 EL Launceston to Scotland with good strike of the Launceston undated circular mark and framed "SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH" on face. Initially rated '1/11'(d) (8d ship letter + 1/3d mileage from Plymouth to Glasgow) then deleted and re-rated '2/-' for the extra 1d postage from Glasgow to Milngarvie. The earliest recorded example of mail from the colony with a Van Dieman's Land handstamps. Major exhibition item. Ex Manning PHOTO - see page 25. £7,500

EARLIEST LETTER IN PRIVATE HANDS; 21 Oct. 1805 EL (some stains and reinforcing) written at Hobart by Matthew Bowden to London and sent via Sydney and Deal (c.d.s on reverse of 11 May 1807!), rated '11'(d) on arrival (4d for an unpaid ship letter and 7d mileage from Deal to London). No postal markings in either Van Dieman's Land or New South Wales in use. Exceptionally important social and historical letter; the writer noting "We have been for several months.....on a very reduced ration about a fortnight ago we procured a scanty supply from 2 Whalers...." and "....comforts we have received via Port Jackson (Sydney) have been sold at an enormous rate...". The earliest letter written in the colony in private hands and an outstanding exhibition item thus. A photocopy of this item is held by the National Library in Australia. PHOTO - see page 25. £5,000

ARLY EXAMPLE OF MAIL ADDRESSED TO THE COLONY; 7 Mar. 1818 EL (file folds and small tear) to Hobart, headed "Enfield Highway 5th March 1818" with "PAID SHIP LETTER/LONDON" c.d.s on face to "John Drummond, Naval Officer" rated '1/9'(d) indicating pre-payment to Sydney and thence carried free to Hobart as addressed to a serving officer. The contents are actually addressed to Drummond's wife Elizabeth and written by her sister A.Lovele. Considerable social and historical interest as Drummond himself was tried for being involved in the murder of his own child apparently born by another one of his sister-in-laws; Lilias McKellar. Rated '4/-' representing the treble 8d ship letter rate + 8d Portsmouth to London mileage charge. Ex Viney and Druce (where sold for CHF 5500 in 2002). Major exhibition item. No "FREE" h.s. existed at Launceston and official mail from outside Hobart is most uncommon. Endorsed "J(oseph).T(ice).Gellibrand" at lower left (1792?-1837) was the first Attorney-General of Van Dieman's Land (1824-26) who later disappeared in the Victorian outback on an expedition and never found. Click to view full image... HOBART INWARD PAID MARKING IN BLACK; 11 July 1840 EL Tamworth, England to Richmond, Van Dieman's Land routed via London where struck with ship letter and PAID datestamps. Redirected (on rear) to Port Phillip ("MELBOURNE/NEW S.WALES") datestamp on reverse and routed via Hobart (where rated '8'(d) 4d ship letter rate plus 4d from Hobart to Richmond i.e 22 miles) and a further '8'(d) from Richmond to Melbourne. Struck with the segmented circular inward "PAID 29 DE 29/1840" marking in Hobart introduced in 1840 and only found in black that year. The latest example recorded and very scarce thus. Rated 'P8' (paid 8d) for the ship letter rate and struck with the Hobart framed "SHIP LETTER 30 JUN 30/1841" on reverse. Rated '1/-' and '9'(d) for inward ship letter fee and mileage from Hobart to Hutton Park. These deleted and only charged the '4'(d) inward ship letter charge. Each with endorsement at lower left indicating payment of the 1d local letter carriers fee of 1d (daily mail collection service between 5 & 6pm, for Hobart residents, officially commencing on 22.4.1852). A total of four examples of this special service are recorded. The former example dated one month prior to the official notice in the Hobart Gazette and unique thus. The former without an outgoing ship letter charge and therefore contrary to regulations and rear flap with manuscript reference to the discovery of gold in the colony. Each marked either 'P1d' or 'C.Duty P1d' to indicate the payment of the 1d local mail collection service (see preceding lot). The former also has a framed Hobart unpaid inland letter datestamp on the reverse of 28.5.1852 which is the latest recorded date of this marking. HOBART SHIP LETTER MARK USED ON MAIL LANDED AT LAUNCESTON; 2 Nov. 1853 EL Geelong (Victoria) to Hobart, rated '3'(d) Victoria Ship letter rate, carried on the 'Lady Bird' which landed at Launceston with arrival c.d.s and Hobart framed "SHIP LETTER/5 NO 5/1853" on reverse. Very unusual example of this marking used between 1.11.1853 when inwards ship letters were no longer charged and 15.12.1853 when the new h.s. was introduced.
