BY NAMED SHIP; [1834] E (some small sellotape-stains at top/corners; tape now removed) from the "British Chamber of Commerce of Canton" (fine green wax seal) to London endorsed "Pr [Ship] Alexander Baring" and "Printed paper" but charged as a normal letter with a very fine framed step-type "DEAL/SHIP LETTER" on the front and rated "3/4 Oz 2/1", with a fine red 3 Apr. 1835 London arrival backstamp. WITH RARE RED BOXED "INDIA LETTER/KINGSBRIDGE"; Fine 9 Nov. 1840 EL from "Macao" to Somerset [Per Ship Louisa Baillie; see Cavendish 'Norman Bennett' auction lots 654/5 for covers by the same sailing] with mainly very fine rare red boxed "INDIA LETTER/KINGSBRIDGE" (Rob. In.1; rare colour) on the top flap. Due to the turmoil at the start of the 1st Opium War the writer complains of a total stop to trade; "...we have received letters from Chusan...the Officers of the Expedition entertain great hopes that matters in dispute will be speedily adjusted...the Volage from Chusan came here the other day...The Admiral is expected here in 3 or 4 days...Lin the Ex[traordinary] Viceroy has just memorialised the Emperor recommending War...nothing is doing in Tea for England, some small lots are being brought down by Smugglers at heavy cost..."
