Click to view full image... HISTORICAL EARLY LETTER TO G.B. WITH 2-RING "*POST OFFICE*/[Lion/Crown]/ADELAIDE" FROM PIONEER "ROBERT GOUGER" HIMSELF; Very fine 16 July 1839 EL (small closed tear just clear of postal rate but well clear of mark does not detract) to "Oatlands, V[an]. D[iemens]. Land" with a mainly very fine (and rare so clear) 1st-Type Adelaide mark, the 2-ring "POST OFFICE/Lion/Crown/ADELAIDE" nicely placed on the front with "10d" Tasmanian arrival-charge alongside. The letter was written and signed by the famous originator of South Australia who was appointed the first S.A. Colonial Secretary way back in 1835 and then arrived at Holdfast Bay in Dec. 1836. This letter refers to the increasing value of his Adelaide town acres, etc.; "I have 17 town acres, and two of them for which I gave originally about £18 - are now worth £3,000... The society is excellent, the Governor is an accomplished scholar and a gentleman...Pray excuse my hurry to save the post." The letter was carried by the Ship "Emma" and is one of the earliest known S.A. covers to Tasmania. Important and attractive Exhibition Item; a marvellous 'Page One' for any South Australia collection. [Ex John Bell.] PHOTO - see page 2. £1,500
