Rear with very fine strike of the framed "India Letter/Gravesend" and London c.d.s. Rated '4'(d) ship letter rate and '10'(d) on arrival (4d India letter + 6d mileage charge). The former rated '2/8'(d) on arrival (4d unpaid India letter + 2/4d mileage Portsmouth to Edinburgh where rated an extra '1'(d) city delivery charge. The latter rated '8'(d) on arrival (4d unpaid India letter + 4d inland postage) as a result of the 1840 postal reforms. The latter the latest example of the Crowned oval handstamp recorded. MISSING CROWN VARIETY OF THE FREE HANDSTAMP; 3 July 1846 OPSO printed EL (contents handwritten and is a letter to the Editor of The Courier newspaper as to health matters in the colony) Hobart to Brown's Plains signed by 'J.Roberts' (Principal Medical Officer of the colony) with a good strike of the Hobart FREE marking showing the Crown missing (apparently bent and eventually broke) these strikes only recorded during 1846.
