Click to view full image... FERNANDO PO - RARE BRITISH P.O. C.D.S. ON EARLY TRANSATLANTIC COVER FROM CORISCO ISLAND TO U.S.A.; Long 12 Mar. 1863 env. (yellow paper; reinforced edges in places - part reverse removed, presumably with a G.B. transit mark, probably of Liverpool) with original contents from "Itandeluku [= the girls' school dwelling house], Corisco [Island] W[est]. A[frica]." to New Jersey endorsed "Via England & Fernando Po" charged "12" and then "33" with a partial very rare small British P.O. "FERNANDO PO" c.d.s. (28 Mar.) on the front along with a fair "NEW YORK...PKT" transit c.d.s. (29? May). The interesting contents mention two enclosed letters ( no longer present) from local men, and note that the letter was to be carried by "Capt. Yates" of "the [Ship] Ann" who was en route from "Gaboon" to America; there is a good description of a recent trip up-country to "Kombe", etc. Very few covers are known with the British P.O. in Fernando Po markings, and this is a most unusual early item from the Mission Station on Corisco Island. C.D.S.'s, ETC.; 3 Dec. 1849 & 8 June 1857 pair of ELs to Bordeaux/Genoa with very fine red or black large double-arc British P.O. "PORTO-CABELLO" c.d.s.'s on the top flaps - also with fine red boxed "COLONIES/&c ART.13" OR black boxed "G.B./1F60c" Accountancy Marks respectively - plus 7 May 1850 EL to London with mainly v. fine red "LA GUAYRA" British P.O. c.d.s., and 1861 EL to G.B. with G.B. 1d Red (crease) cancelled in London having been placed over the sender's blue oval "PUERTO CABELLO" cachet. THOMAS"; Attractive 8 Sept. 1861 EL from "La Guaira" to New York "By way of St.Thomas" prepaid "1/-" (in red crayon) with a very fine black 2-ring "PAID/AT/LA-GUAYRA" Crowned Circle (SG £1,300) nicely placed on the front along with a very fine encircled NY "STEAMSHIP/10" arrival charge-mark; there are also very fine double-arc c.d.s. backstamps of the British P.O.s in "LA-GUAYRA" (mainly fine, filing fold; oddly wrongly dated "SP08/1862"!) and "ST-THOMAS" (12 Sept.; across join). Click to view full image... CIUDAD BOLIVAR - 1867 G.B. 1/- GREEN WITH "D22" CANCELLATION ETC.: 1867 Great Britain 1/- green plate 4 CH (marginal) with almost complete "D22" (type 12) cancellation. Also Trinidad 1863 Trinidad (1d) lake with similar cancellation. Fine. Note: In 1866 a packet agency was started at this office. A steamer called at Trinidad and for some reason Trinidad stamps were sent to Ciudad Bolivar. It has been suggested this was done to aid the Trinidad P.O. in sorting local letters from those addressed to Europe. PHOTO - see page 40. £100

LA GUAYRA - BLACK CROWNED CIRCLES CANCELLING G.B. 1d REDS ON PART COVER TO MEXICO; Large part 8 June 1871 E from "LA GUAYRA" (firm's blue oval d.s. beside the stamps) to "Senores Calleja Hermanos y Cia" - a firm that is recorded as having been in Vera Cruz (4d rate; as per 1876 cover below) - with G.B. Strip of Four 1d Reds (pl.111) tied by several fine to very fine black 2-ring "PAID/AT/LA-GUAYRA" Crowned Circles (SG £1,300 on stampless covers) with a large part very fine small "ST-THOMAS" TRANSIT c.d.s. (13 June) on the top flap. This exceptional usage of a Crowned Circle to cancel G.B. stamps is only recorded for La Guayra from May 1871 until July 1872; very few examples are known even off cover. (Bollen had a part front & Glassco had the only cover of which we are aware.) Exhibition Quality. PHOTO - see page 11. £500

This exceptional usage of a Crowned Circle to cancel G.B. stamps is only recorded for La Guayra from May 1871 until July 1872; very few examples are known even off cover.
