"BRITISH/MAIL/ANTANANARIVO" DATESTAMP ON CASH/STAMP COMBINATION COVER TO G.B.; Attractive 21 Nov. 1890 env. to London with a very fine rare blue "BRITISH/MAIL/ANTANANARIVO" c.d.s. on the front (showing that the internal Madagascar postage had been prepaid in cash) along with a Pair of French Colonies 25c Type Sage (one with fault at left) unusually tied by a single mainly very fine "LA REUNION A MARSEILLE/L.V.No.2" octagonal d.s. with a further strike also on the front. The internal postage was not prepaid with the famous consular stamps at this date, but in cash; nevertheless this is still a Combination Cover, having the Consular c.d.s. to prove the prepayment of the internal rate to Tamatave, and the French stamps for the U.P.U. postage on to Europe. Burke in Dublin (from Surgeon John Burke; see Osborn's 'Naval Officers' Letters' p.19 for a similar cover) "Via Marseilles" and also endorsed (by addressee) "Singapore" with date on the front; having G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' (4; pl.68) plus Small Letters 6d Lilac all tied (except the single 1d which clearly also belongs) by mainly fine to very fine rare "B57" Mailboat Numerals, struck on the ship SS 'Poonah' en route from Alexandria to Marseilles. VERY RARE INDIA SURCHARGE 12c-RATE COVER TO PRUSSIA "VIA TRIEST" WITH TWO 6c ON 2a YELLOW TIED BY THE "PENANG/D17" DUPLEX; Remarkable 6 Feb. 1868 EL (trivial faults) to "Iserlohn [Prussia] via Triest" franked for the 12c rate by two India Surcharge 6c on 2a Yellows tied by a faint blue oval sender's 'chop' and a light "PENANG/FE 10/68/D17" Duplex with blue crayon and fair boxed blue Trieste "4" charge-mark on the front, having a fine 14 March "AUSG./No.2" backstamp. India Surcharge covers from Penang are rare, but this German States destination is doubly exceptional. VERY RARE GREEN FALMOUTH "MEXICO" FLEURON ON COVER ADDRESSED TO LONDON; 5 Dec. 1826 EL from "Mexico" to London charged "9/-" and most unusually with a remarkably fine (for this) bright green Falmouth "MEXICO" Fleuron on the flap but also having a very fine red "FALMOUTH/273" c.d.s. (29 Jan.) on the other flap. The Falmouth F/fleuron marks were intended for use on Packet Letter mail addressed to places west or north of London; they are very rare on mail addressed to the capital. This combination of a red Falmouth mileage mark with a green Fleuron may be unique. Exhibition Item.
