The cover endorsed at lower left by Baron, Lord & Sir Frederick Lugan (1858-1945), commissioned by the British Government, Lugan organised the West African Frontier Force from August 1897 - December 1899. CROSS-BORDER COVER TO U.S. VIA NEW BRUNSWICK WITH EARLY AMHERST CROWNED CIRCLE; 7 July 1846 EL from "Manudier"(?) to Hartford (Conn.) with a very fine red 2-ring "PAID/AT/AMHERST.N.S." Crowned Circle (light fold) nicely placed on the front beside red manuscript "111/2" rate but with "PAID" crossed through and US charge of "10" added; there are New Brunswick backstamps of DORCHESTER, ST. ANNS BAY & ST. JOHNS, as well as a red "ROBINSTON/Me" c.d.s. on the front. Attractive example of this elusive Crowned Circle and possibly the earliest known example. Exhibition Item. DUNCAN" device - opens up neatly for display) to Brighton with G.B. 1d Reds Strip of Six (pl.88) tied by mainly fine rare "A92" Numerals (with a further strike alongside) used on board the Cunard S.S. 'Asia' en route from Halifax to Ireland; the writer of this cover was stationed on HMS Duncan at Halifax at this time; Derek's notes refer to this letter having had contents (no longer present) including; "My dear uncle, I send you one of my photographs in the uniform you so kindly presented me with...". [Ship] Elizabeth Radcliffe" posted on arrival in "LIVERPOOL" (red 11 Jan. 1841 c.d.s. - closed tear - on reverse) and is franked by a G.B. 1d Black (JG, Plate 4; good to wide margins all round but just touched at top left corner) tied by a matching orange-red Liverpool Maltese Cross. STAMPS CANCELLED BY RED ARICA C.D.S. & LONDON 'SPRING' MARKS; Extraordinary post-earthquake 21 Sept. 1869 EL (staining marks mainly internal) from "Tacna" to the Dordogne "Via Panama & Southampton" franked both by Peru 1d Green (4 good to wide margins) - tied by a very fine Peru "TACNA" c.d.s. (21 Sept.) - and also franked by G.B. 1d Reds (2; pl.105) and 9d Straw Pair (wmk. Spray, pl.4; wing-margin at right beneath 1d Red); the 9d Pair is cancelled & tied by a mainly very fine rare red (unusual colour) small "A/ARICA" c.d.s. (which also just ties one of the 1d Reds - the other 1d Red is tied by the Calais transit c.d.s.), but all the G.B. stamps are also cancelled and/or tied by 5 strikes of the London Foreign Branch 'spring' mark in black (that was usually used to cancel PD marks struck in error), with a small red London "PD" in circle and transit c.d.s. on the front. It is thought that only one other cover with G.B. stamps has been recorded that was sent from this P.O. - as this cover was - after the disastrous earthquake and tsunami destroyed the town on 13 Aug. 1868. GREEN FALMOUTH "LISBON/F" MARK ON NAVAL OFFICER's COVER REDIRECTED WITHIN IRELAND; Fine 9 June 1842 EL (family letter) from "Lisbon" (in text of letter) to Ireland (redirected on arrival with mainly fine rare "KILDORERRY/152" Mileage charged "1/9" (and then "1/10") with a very fine bright green Falmouth undated "LISBON/F" mark on the front.
