Click to view full image... YOKOHAMA - UNDERPAID "A83" MAILBOAT COVER TO G.B. VIA "HONG KONG" WITH G.B. 1d RED; 12 July 1861 env. (slight edge wear) to "Mrs. John Lowder" in Kent initialled "J.F.L." [John Fuge Lowder, a junior interpreter in the British Consulate in Yokohama] and dated on the front; franked by a G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' (on a piece of paper glued to this envelope by the sender) well tied by a very fine rare "A83" Mailboat cancel (struck on the P&O SS Ceylon en route from Alexandria to Southampton) charged "2" initially with a mainly fine small "HONG KONG/C" c.d.s. (8 Aug.) on the reverse, but then charged "11d" on arrival in G.B. (the full unpaid 1/- rate less a credit of 1d for the British stamp). The sender, J.F. Lowder, worked for the British diplomatic service for many years and was a significant Anglo-Japanese pioneer; he played a crucial role in the defense of the British Consul-General during a rare visit to Yedo [= Tokyo] on the night of 4/5 July 1861 when he fired his pistol at midnight renin attackers, so this letter presumably contained news of that event and would have been sent from the writer's base at the Consulate in Yokohama (as Yedo had no mail service at this time). Exceptional and Important Exhibition Item. [BPA 1979 cert.] PHOTO - see page 6. £1,500

'Poonah' en route from Egypt to Southampton; there are backstamps of "HONG-KONG" (v. fine in blue; 30 Nov.) and L. Buzzard (18 Jan. 1864).
