Wallace Simpson, Musical Instrument Dealer, BARBADOS, W.I." explaining that this cover had been sent during a stamp shortage at the international 1/2d Circular rate with a rudimentary sketch of the Crowned Circle. S[cotia]." (v. fine oval d.s. on back, 25 Apr.) endorsed "P Mail" with a red manuscript "4" and a very fine rare 2-ring Hamilton Crowned Circle (P2; crown slightly affected by small natural paper wrinkle) in bright red at top left, having the matching partial PM4 "HAMILTON/[+BERMU]DA+" c.d.s. on the reverse. TORTOLA CROWNED CIRCLE IN BLACK ON KGV POSTCARD WITH STAMP ON PICTURE SIDE; Fine 22 May 1915 PPC (Tortola street-scene) to Italy franked with KGV 1/2d Green on the picture side tied by a very fine 2-ring "ROAD-TOWN/TORTOLA V.I." c.d.s., with a second mainly fine strike of the same c.d.s. on the address side but also having a mainly very fine black "PAID/AT/TORTOLA" Crowned Circle (type 2) on the address-side, applied in transit at the head P.O., presumably as authority for allowing the stamp on the picture side, and so also having a purple straight-line "Bologna Posta Stero" (stamp on back) mark, which overlaps the other marks on the address side. Remarkable late usage of this mark as per the footnote in the SG catalogue about its known use as an Official Paid mark in 1900-18 (cat. £950). [BPA 1998 Cert.] PHOTO - see page 17. £300

VALPARAISO - 1878 G.B. £1 BROWN-LILAC WITH CENTRAL "C30" CANCELLATION - ONE OF THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES: 1878 Great Britain £1 brown-lilac CB with central sideways "C30" (type 12) cancellation. Thinned at top and small faults at foot. Believed to be one of three recorded examples. BPA Cert (1990) stating the cancellation is genuine. Also RPSL Cert (1991) stating the cancellation is forged. SG Z90 £4,000. Therefore offered on an "as is" basis. Note the 1978 A Bollen auction contained the stamp DC which was also centred to the left as is the stamp offered here. PHOTO - see page 12. £400
