VERY FINE RED ARC-FRAMED "GIBRALTAR" MARK ON DOUBLE LETTER FROM A SOLDIER; Fine 4 Jan. 1810 EL from Sergeant "Jno Telfer" of the "Royal Artillery" in Gibraltar to Edinburgh with a very fine red arc-framed "GIBRALTAR" nicely placed on the front with "5/10" charge and a fine red Edinburgh arrival c.d.s. (24 Jan.). The letter originally had an enclosure, and so the sender was aware that it would not qualify for the Soldiers' 1d Concession rate - the letter concerned a credit to the Sergeant of £400! He comments that; "When you write an answer, please to address me as Serjeant, and if a penny is paid to the Post Office with the Letter, it will be forwarded free of postage...". Emphatic evidence that a single letter at the 1d rate was a bargain (instead of 2s-11d normal postage! Exhibition Quality. PHOTO - see page 20. £150
