Morgan states that he received his correspondent's letter and 'the very interesting enclosures' and continues 'I am inclined towards a certain amount of sympathy with the spelling movement, but feel that, being incurably old fashioned, I shall never be quite a convert' adding 'Now as to "thru" we have no word so ending in the language - and if thru is to spell through, surely ruf ought to spell roof. Thrue would be more consonant with the parallels - and if theater is right, ought not the adjective to be theaterical? It seems to me so much turns on the dynamic value one imputes to etymology as a factor in language - To me the suggestions of the written tongue are a force in themselves.' De Morgan also comments on the British nation and her resistance to a 'perfect system of decimal coinage', explaining 'Fifty years ago I remember how my father fought for the change, and British obstinacy (headed by Gladstone) fought against it and won. Think of the stupendous labour (not labor) that might have been saved in that fifty years!' That shows what we are.' He concludes 'Italy is beautiful beyond belief now - the fireflies are like a fallen down starlight night.' Some light age wear, otherwise VG £100 - 150

The art Critics left it to the waiters, the waiters just left it. All Damon Runyon said was that he wasn't wearing that kind of a hat.....A lot of jerks complained they weren't sitting where I put them. I told 'em to move over if they liked....When I was painting the thing Commander Gene Stratford-on-Avon Tunney came in to see it. On the occasion of Gene's becoming the Champion of Illinois people asked him if Jack really had plaster of Paris bandages and horseshoes in his gloves and he told them sure, and ten terrible knuckles too, but not to quote him. Jack came in a number of times to see the painting and enthused - called it a masterpiece and things like that.....My daughter came in one day when Jack was there. He has a nice way with youngsters - asked me if I was going to make an artist out of her I said - no, art wasn't contagious. Did he ever hear of the father of Velasquez? No, he hadn't. Did he ever hear of the son of Velasquez? He said "No. I didn't - I never even heard of Velasquez!"' and continuing, in part, 'A few years ago I took quite an interest in me - when it was fashionable to do so - and as this dinner is ostensibly for me - are there any questions? I feel at liberty to mention me', further referring to his early career and the artists that inspired him ('I'm sure lots of you never heard of the artists of that period there are youngsters today who never heard of Gibson! The greatest of them all.'), mentioning painting Mark Twain, commenting on his distaste of 'the disease known as MODERN ART!', and making comparisons between artists and writers, 'They paint and draw - everything but conclusions - they drink and fornicate and have a nice all round life....But writers read books and sometimes write the damn things - they are more exciting company - more unpredictable - that's why I find them more companiable (sic)....'
