CHAPLIN CHARLES: (1889-1977) English Film Comedian, Academy Award winner. Vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph, a close-up portrait of the smiling Chaplin. Signed, to the verso, in blue ink, 'To Bert, "One of our gang", Charles Chaplin'. The verso is also signed in dark blue ink by British character actor Oliver Johnston (1888-1966) who starred in both Chaplin's A King in New York and A Countess from Hong Kong. VG £100 - 150

LAUREL STAN (1890-1965) & HARDY OLIVER (1892-1957) English and American Film Comedians. A pair of black leather size 9 Grenson shoes, previously belonging to Stan Laurel, the left shoe signed to the insole by Laurel, 'Our Best Wishes Stan Laurel' and the right shoe signed to the insole by Hardy, 'Happy Memories Oliver Hardy'. With the original laces. The shoes show a great deal of wear and, understandably, the signatures have somewhat poor contrast, although captured in good light at the correct angle are legible. A wonderful and extremely rare souvenir of one of the greatest ever comedy duos. FR £400 - 600
Provenance: Previously the property of Alice McCue, a relative of the vendor, who was employed as a cleaner at the Odeon Theatre in Southend-on-Sea at the time of Laurel & Hardy's live performances there in the week of 4th August 1952 during part of their British Tour. Stan Laurel requested that Alice McCue obtain a new pair of shoes for him, which she did, and when asking Laurel how she should dispose of his old pair (the present lot), the comedian gave them to her, applying his signature to the left shoe and Hardy his signature to the right shoe.

HANCOCK TONY: (1924-1968) British Television & Radio Comedian. T.L.S., Tony Hancock, one page, 8vo, n.p., 20th March 1956, to Mrs. Madge Powell. Hancock thanks his correspondent for her charming letter and comments 'I am not only flattered but quite overwhelmed to know that you and your husband have followed my career so closely since that far-off "Guest Night" of Henry Hall's.' He further states that he is glad to know that they have enjoyed the Hancock's Half-Hour series, adding 'I cannot help feeling a little sad now that the radio series has come to an end, but we hope to return to the air in the autumn, when I sincerely trust that you will both again be regular listeners.' In concluding the comedian offers to send two tickets to attend a recording of his radio programme which he explains usually take place on Sunday nights. Together with a second T.L.S. on behalf of Hancock by a secretary, one page, 8vo, n.p. (London), 19th February 1957, also to Mrs. Powell, explaining that the last recording of the present series of Hancock's Half-Hour takes place on Thursday, 21st February and not on the usual Sunday, and enclosing a complimentary ticket (still present) for two to the recording at The Paris, Regent Street, London.
