GREEN HUGHIE: (1920-1997) British Entertainer & Television Presenter. The professional engagement diaries of Hughie Green, fourteen volumes, 1964-77. The 4to hardback diaries, most published by the Hunting Group, contain multiple entries on an almost daily basis, all in the hands of secretaries (mainly Pam Jagger) and with the occasional holograph entry by Green himself ('Hughie Away - Peace Will Reign', 2nd - 5th November 1970), detailing numerous appointments with a wide variety of individuals and famous names including Richard Attenborough, Donald Campbell (at Coniston, 26th October 1966, and later recording Campbell's Memorial Service on 23rd February 1967), Tonia Campbell, Billy Butlin, David Jacobs, Ursula Bloom, Anton Dolin, Yehudi Menuhin, Richard Todd, Max Bygraves, Kenneth More, Ben Lyon, Vera Lynn, Emile Littler, Lord Harewood, David Dimbleby, Fred Pontin, Les Dawson, Mary Whitehouse, Leslie Grade, Chapman Pincher, Dermot Boyle, Susannah York, Cyril Stapleton, Dezo Hoffmann, Lord Ted Willis, Jack Hulbert, Charlie Chester, Danny La Rue, Barbara Cartland, George Best, Michael Grade, Freddie Starr, Fred Pontin, Arthur Askey, Wendy Craig, Bernard Delfont, Jimmy Saville, Frankie Howerd, Harry Secombe, Lord Bath etc., also noting the auditions (at many towns and cities around the United Kingdom), rehearsals, recordings and broadcasts for Green's television and radio shows including Opportunity Knocks, Double Your Money etc., meetings at various venues including the Soviet, Danish, German and Polish Embassies, 10 Downing Street receptions (1968 & 1975, the latter in honour of Pierre Trudeau), engagements including guest appearances to open shops and supermarkets (often recording the fee that Green received), and television, radio and newspaper interviews and appearances, including the Morecambe and Wise Show (1974), many luncheons including Variety Club Awards Luncheon, Foyles Luncheon, Miss World Finalists Tribute Luncheon (1973), Lena Zavaroni's birthday party (1975) etc., various accommodation and travel arrangements for many countries including Russia, America, Israel, Canada, Australia, Cyprus, Malta, Switzerland and Japan, also including many references to flying aircraft, spending time on his boat, his model train set, also recording some personal events associated with his mother, wife, children Linda and Christopher (recording their birthdays in most diaries, and the later volumes making references to telephone calls with his son) and other individuals including June Laverick (a holograph entry 'See Miss Laverick if she is good' appears in Green's hand on 31st December 1975), Noel Botham (seemingly recording their first meeting on 13th August 1973 and with many meetings afterwards). A small collection of awards and other souvenirs, each presented to or associated with Hughie Green, including two Friends of the Academy BAFTA presentations, each with engraved plaques, 'Endowed by Christina Sharples in memory of Hughie Green' (one mounted to a wooden plinth), a metal cigarette lighter in the shape of a fighter plane, mounted with an engraved plaque, 'To Hughie Green with grateful thanks and appreciation from the RAF association, 25th Anniversary, Battle of Britain, September 1965', another cigarette lighter presented to Green by the London Borough of Camden Road Safety Committee, 1969, a silver hallmarked heart shaped award presented to Green by the Variety Club of Great Britain, 1965, and a smaller gold hallmarked heart shaped award presented to Green by the Variety Club of Great Britain, 1973, three tankards each with presentation engravings to Green 1961, 1973 (on the occasion of his 53rd birthday from 'Golden Balls') and 1977 etc. G to generally VG, 13 £100 - 120

[GREEN HUGHIE]: (1920-1997) British Entertainer & Television Presenter. Hughie Green's personal This Is Your Life book, the famous red 4to volume with gilt stamped title and Green's name to the cover, the title page printed in blue with gold lettering, 'This book is presented to Hughie Green as a memento of his appearance as the subject of This Is Your Life', signed and inscribed in black ink by presenter Eamonn Andrews, 'From your faithful Mechanic, with every good wish, Eamonn'. The book contains over 30 9.5 x 7.5 (and some slightly smaller) photographs of the show, each neatly laid down alongside printed captions (the captions now detached from the pages, although almost entirely complete), the images showing Green with his mother and various other celebrities and colleagues including Margaret Lockwood, Ben Lyon, Les Dawson, Frank Carson, Freddie Starr and other performers on Opportunity Knocks, Danny La Rue etc. With the original vinyl disc recording of the show inserted at the back. Small, miscellaneous selection of T.Ls.S., signed Christmas greetings cards, a few signed photographs etc., by Hughie Green, including a T.L.S., with his initial H, one page, small 4to, Baker Street, London, 6th February 1970, to Robert Sharples ('My dear Bob'), thanking him for a birthday gift and remarking 'I do hope that you and Christine will assist me in getting rid of it. You are a kind old bugger, even though you live on the tourist infested Southend type rutted road Island of Majorca', five different individually signed Christmas greetings cards, most with his first name only, one additionally annotated 'Thank you for all you've both done in - and out - of the studio. Let's hope it goes on a long time.' and another featuring an Opportunity Knocks cartoon by Franklin to the cover, a hardback edition of Opportunity Knocked, First Edition, 1965, signed and inscribed by Green, presumably to his secretary Pam Jagger, 'To Pam, Thank you for all the many "Knocks" you've saved me. Sincerely, Hughie', and also including a miscellaneous selection of letters etc., to Green, one a T.L.S. by Christina Sharples, one page, 4to, Greville Place, London, 12th October 1987, to 'Dearest Hughie', following the death of her husband just over a month earlier, in part, 'As you know, over the past three weeks, I have faced the daunting task of writing over 100 letters, trying to make each one individual, although they were all on the same subject. I decided to leave the difficult ones to the last, and yours to be last of all.....the object of this letter is to put on paper my thoughts about the Address you gave on September 14th. No-one in the world could have done it better, and there is no-one else I would have wanted to do it - thank you. Regardless of what we have meant to each other in the past, mean to each other now, and whatever the future might be, I want you to know that I will forever be grateful....You are a very special person to me.' [ZAVARONI LENA]: (1963-1999) Scottish Child Singer & Entertainer. A silver 45rpm disc of Lena Zavaroni's Ma! (He's Making Eyes at Me), awarded to Hughie Green by Phonogram Ltd for sales in excess of 250,000 copies of the record, professionally mounted on burgundy above an engraved plaque and framed and glazed in the original plain silver coloured presentation frame to an overall size of 10 x 12. Together with a small selection of unsigned 8 x 10 photographs of the young Zavaroni (one showing Hughie Green presenting the singer with her silver disc for the same recording), newspaper clippings, printed 4to programme for a performance at the London Palladium etc. Generally VG, 15 £80 - 100
In 1974 Zavaroni appeared on Green's Opportunity Knocks and won the show for a record-breaking five weeks running. She followed this with the album Ma! (He's Making Eyes At Me), which reached number eight in the UK album chart. At 10 years, 146 days old, Lena is still the youngest person to have an album in the Top 10 and was also the youngest person to appear on the BBC's Top of the Pops.

A selection of printed ephemera relating to the death and funeral of Hughie Green including Christina Sharples' personal copy of the printed 8vo Order of Service for the funeral of Hugh H. Green at Golders Green Crematorium, 9th May 1997, featuring An Appreciation of the Life of Hughie Green given by Noel Botham, and another by Nigel Griffiths MP, a selection of 12mo Sentiment Cards removed from floral tributes, with holograph notes, including one from Christina Sharples ('Hughie - I will always love you. I will always keep my promises to you. I will never forget you, Your Christina'), Bobby Crush ('To dear Hughie, who launched my career and to whom I will always be grateful. Bobby Crush') etc., various Sympathy cards and letters sent to Christina Sharples on the death of Green, from Green's best man Art Teulon, representatives of London Weekend Television, Roger Gale MP, Clementina Bentine (wife of Michael Bentine) and other friends, some with typed copies of Sharples' replies, also including a large quantity of newspaper and magazine clippings retained by Christina Sharples, all relating to Paula Yates and the posthumous revelation that Hughie Green was her father. It was journalist Noel Botham's infamous eulogy at Green's funeral that led to weeks of media coverage regarding Green being the father of Paula Yates.

CAMPBELL DONALD: (1921-1967) British Car & Motorboat Racer, World Land and Water Speed Record Holder in the 1950s and 1960s. An unusual vintage signed and inscribed 6.5 x 5 photograph, the image depicting a Corgi die-cast model of the Bluebird against a backdrop of the Bonneville Salt Flats at Utah, signed in blue fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image, 'Bob from Donald'. With the original printed caption detached from the verso. An archive of personal correspondence, largely from Sharples to his wife Christina, mainly 1960s-1970s, including many A.Ls.S. (signed in a variety of forms, some with sketches of a bunny rabbit), signed Christmas gift tags, signed Birthday, Valentines and Christmas cards, printed telegrams (received copies) etc., many of the letters from Sharples to his wife of a romantic and intimate nature, including a series written from Majorca to his wife in London, discussing various subjects including preparations for their house on the island, bull fights, expressing his love for Christina etc., in part, 'Bull fight last Sunday - not good. Bulls too small but very, very brave. I cried for one of them! Silly? I suppose so but then that is what one goes to the bullfight for.', 'A very loud voiced man at the next table was airing his views on all and sundry last eve and one of his more blatant insanities was that he liked Diana Dors because he was sure she didn't really want to be anything more than a home-loving housewife and everybody had done the wrong thing by making her a publicity seeking filmstar!! You can imagine how I spluttered into my soup!!', 'Donald & Tonia Campbell & two other people and about a hundred kids arrived here last week out of the blue. In many ways it has been a happy and rewarding association, but your remarks to me this evening have convinced me that indeed, as far as you are concerned, I have outlived my usefulness. I have not, nor have I ever been, cut out to be a stooge - musical or otherwise. Stooges are plentiful - and I am sure there will be no difficulty in finding one to cater to your tasks.', further including some correspondence to Bob and Christina Sharples from various individuals including the roller skater Gloria Nord, one A.N., unsigned, by Hughie Green to the verso of a comical picture postcard, to Bob Sharples, 'Really Bob, Christina should give you a hand.....with the cooking.' MASCAGNI PIETRO: (1863-1945) Italian Composer. Vintage signed postcard photograph of the composer in a profile half length pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image and dated Prague, 26th March 1902 in his hand to a clear area at the head of the image. A heavy circular stain to the verso only very lightly affects the image and is barely noticeable, VG £100 - 120

In dark fountain pen ink the composer has attractively penned four bars of music, with words, which he identifies as being from his opera L'amico Fritz (1891). Paderewski apologises to his correspondent for the delay in replying to her, explaining that his doctors had strictly forbidden him any intellectual work. He continues 'To my great regret, I cannot obtain for you any information on Poland, which I visited for the last time twelve years ago. All I can say is that nowhere is peace more obviously wished for than in my country.' and in concluding sends a 'modest contribution....towards the fine and noble charity you have founded...' T.L.S., Leopold Stokowski, one page, 4to, New York, 22nd March 1947, to Alfred Kalmus of the Anglo-Soviet Music Press. Stokowski announces 'On June 16 I would like to conduct Shostakovich 9th Symphony with the Orchestre du Conservatoire in the Theatre Champs Elysees in Paris' and asks his correspondent if they can rent him the score and parts and what the price for one performance would be, further adding that they would require them in good time before the rehearsal on 11th June. Furtwangler announces 'I have now performed the Petroushka Suite at the Salzburg concert in accordance with the music material you provided me with (the suite in the usual composition), and continues Aside from the fact that the pianist, while good otherwise, proved not to be completely suited to this special task, the performance was good. However the acoustics in the present Salzburg Festival Hall are very unfavourable for concerts, particularly for the strings, I greatly enjoyed the performance…' He further adds 'I intend to repeat it in the course of the winter in Vienna, and in Buenos Aires, where I will be in April. I have left the material in Salzburg for now and have asked the people there to contact you regarding the hire fee.' And concludes 'However, I should like to perform Strauss's oboe concerto in Vienna. Will you be coming to Lucerne during August?' A letter of good musical content. VG £200 - 300

An excellent vintage signed postcard photograph, the circular inset image depicting the tenor in a profile head and shoulders pose in costume as Chevalier des Grieux from Giacomo Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut, signed by Caruso to the large white border to the right of the image, with an excellent, bold pen and ink self caricature in his hand, showing him in a profile head and shoulders study. A good, scarce vintage signed cabinet photograph of Wittich standing in a three quarter length pose in costume as Brunnhilde from Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. Photograph by Martin Herzfeld of Dresden and Leipzig. Signed by Wittich in bold, dark fountain pen ink with her name alone to a clear area at the base of the image.
