South Africa used in S.W.A. 1916 Registered censored cover from Windhuk to the Bureau International de la Paix in Switzerland franked 1/2d and 6d with boxed "R. / WINDHUK / No." registration handstamp; 1916 censored cover franked 1/2d pair tied by oval "Swakopmund / Post" datestamp, backstamped by Karibib and "KLEIN WINDHUK" rubber c.d.s (Putzel type 2); and 1919 cover to Germany franked 1d and 11/2d tied by uncommon "WINDHUK / S.W.A.P" c.d.s (Putzel type 17, only used for 7 months). 1923-27 Overprints, a mainly mint selection on pages with 1923 first setting 1/2d - 2/6 in pairs or blocks, 1/2d plate block with defective watermark variety, 1d, 4d and 6d plate blocks, 1/3 pairs with litho overprint in shiny ink, 1d block of 36 with various minor overprint varieties, etc. Also 1923 postage dues with plate varieties including "postade", stop after "due" and minor overprint varieties. 1923 First setting 1d corner plate blocks of 12 (2, plate numbers "6" and "7") and a block of four, all three blocks including the variety "Af.rica", the plate 7 block with the remnants of the printers blocks around the overprint visible on several stamps. Davies in Widnes with "TRISTAN / DA / CUNHA" type 1 cachet, octagonal framed "T" and a "1d/F.B" charge mark applied in the London Foreign Branch with a 1d postage due tied by Widnes c.d.s (28 Jan 19). 1922 Stampless cover to England bearing "TRISTAN DA CUNHA / SOUTH / ATLANTIC" type II cachet in black with fine "S-R. ANTARCTIC / EXPEDITION 1921" c.d.s (MY 25), a "11/2d/F.B" charge mark applied in the London Foreign Branch, 1/2d and 1d postage due stamps tied by Botley c.d.s (July 11). W.H Channing, Chaplain, Stanton Hospital, Washington City, D.C" franked 1861-62 1c and 3c (3c postage + 1c carriers fee) tied by Philadelphia Pa c.d.s, the enclosed letter on patriotic notepaper showing "Young America off to the War", written from the Philadelphia General Hospital on behalf of Peter Mooney, E. Co., 57th N.Y Volunteers, a patient in G. Ward, requesting all his money be sent by Adams Express to his wife in New York; a note on the cover shows $52 was despatched by Adams Express. Also other covers from Union soldiers (2, one stampless from Port Royal, South Carolina, with "Due 3"); to Union soldiers (4); a cover to the U.S.S "Sweet Brier" at Port Royal; cover from the 8th Army Corps H.Q; affidavits from relatives or widows of soldiers all bearing 5c revenue stamps (5); signature of General McClellan on piece; and patriotic envelopes (14, most unused, some faults).
