3d Surcharge on 4d blue, first setting with level stops, the rare but controversial error of colour fine mint. This stamp was first reported by a former postal inspector J. Duiven in 1921, who claimed to have purchased a block of forty with a further 20 stamps having been sold elsewhere, the Postmaster General then ordering the return of 32 of these stamps which were presumably destroyed. In 1923 Leon de Raay claimed to have seen the remaining block of 20 and declared them to be forgeries, this view being shared by The Stamp Trade Protection Society. However the overprint on this stamp is exceptionally convincing, and R. Hisey and R. Bartshe in their book "Orange Free State Philately" (2002) are of the opinion that the surcharge is a genuine error. Also examples of the 3d on 3d and 4d on 4d surcharges and a photo of a block of seven of the surcharge error from the lower right corner of the pane signed by Leon de Raay. Photo on page 149. £150-250

With a Lydenburg c.d.s (date inverted, year omitted) on the front, backstamped at Pretoria and Newcastle, Natal (Oct 2), charged "2d" in blue crayon, the bisect either disallowed upon arrival or, more likely, the item deemed to be a letter so underpaid by 1d. Backstamped at Chrissies Meer (Dec 1), Ermelo, Newcastle and Ladysmith (Dec 3/4), the bisect apparently disallowed upon arrival with a "T4d" charge shown in blue crayon. An exceptional bisect cover. 1894 De La Rue Minerva Head Essays

In 1894 it was suggested that the Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Natal and the Transvaal should issue stamps of equal colour and value. De La Rue submitted a colour scheme using these "Africa" essays whilst others were handpainted for the individual colonies. The Cape and Natal adopted the scheme, but agreement could not be reached with the Transvaal and O.F.S.
