Shanghai - General Gordon. 1863 (Aug 12) Stampless cover written by Charles Henry Gordon, Commander of the mercenary forces (known as the "Ever Victorious Army") from Quisan, shortly after the capture of the city from the Taipings, addressed in Gordon's distinctive handwriting to his father in England, "Lieut. General Gordon, Royal Artillery, Southampton, England", initialled "C.H.G" and inscribed "Via Marseille". The cover was hand carried to Shanghai where it was posted into the British Post Office prepaid in cash with red crayon "1/4" and "SHANGHAE / PAID" c.d.s with "LONDON / PAID" arrival c.d.s (Oct 7), backstamped at "SHANGHAE" (Aug 15), "HONG KONG" (Aug 21) and "SOUTHAMPTON" (Oct 8), also endorsed "p. Messageries Imperiales" and "Too late from Quinsam to be posted last mail". Gordon earned the nickname "Chinese Gordon" for his services in China during the Taiping Rebellion of 1863-64, and was to famously die in Khartoum in 1885. An interesting historical cover, with fine strikes of both the uncommon Shanghai datestamps and the Hong Kong c.d.s, the upper flap opened out and glued to a part album page from which it could easily be removed, otherwise very fine. 1911 Cover to London, addressed in the handwriting of Walter Windham, bearing KEVII 3p (2) and 1/2a each tied by a superb strike of the "FIRST AERIAL POST / U.P. EXHIBITION ALLAHABAD" cancellation depicting an aeroplane, in violet, backstamped at Allahabad (Feb 18), Bombay (Feb 20) and London E.C (Mar 11). Enclosed is a card with the printed message "London Address: 30, Evelyn Gardens, S.W. I have the honour to ask if you will kindly accept this letter-card as a souvenir of the first official aerial post which was despatched from the U.P. Exhibition, Allahabad, officially sanctioned, and carried by an aeroplane under Government Post Office Regulations on 20th February 1911. N.B. - The envelope bears the impress of the First Aerial Post." signed by Walter Windham, the organiser of the aerial post (and also of the London to Windsor aerial post held later in 1911). Second Mahratta War. 1805 (May 30) Entire letter to London written by an army officer from Fort William, Calcutta, endorsed "pr United Kingdom" and charged the 4d ship letter rate, with fine "SHIP LETTER / LONDON" c.d.s (Rob. S15). Contents include "Our regiment .... upon arriving in the Hughley was detained by Marquis Wellesley in this place. You have doubtless heard before this reaches you of the fresh war that has broken out with Scindia & Holkar. You have heard likewise that Lord Lake has given several ineffectual assaults to Bharitpore, it however surrendered by capitulation...". The letter also mentions desertions at Madeira, anchoring off Tranquebar and the ill health of the men. £200-250

Mutiny of Seringapatam. 1809 (Sep 5) Entire letter from Bombay to Scotland with boxed "B.BAY POST PAID" and oval "SHIP LETTER / LONDON" (Rob S9), exceptional contents describe the mutiny - "An engagement has taken place in Madras between the disaffected troops and those who still adhere to the cause of the Government. The 8th and 15th native regiments were marching to join the other troops in Seringapatam, when they were intercepted by Colonel Gibbs with a force of four times the number. The 8th and 15th regiments endeavoured to come to terms with Colonel Gibbs, and were formed in close columns not expected to be attacked when Colonel Gibbs artillery turned upon them and swept away whole ranks, they then endeavoured to deploy into line and when their ranks were opened two or three regiments of cavalry rushed in amongst them and destroyed the whole of them, in the meantime there was a sully made from Seringapatam upon Gibbs camp but were repulsed....". £200-250

Letter number 30 from this famous correspondence, written from Jelum whilst marching with General Pollack's relief force to Kabul.
