Bordeaux. 1871 (Mar 1 & 9) Covers both bearing Bordeaux printing imperf 20c blue each cancelled "532" with "BORDEAUX / ASSEMBLEE NATLE" c.d.s alongside. This numeral and c.d.s only used at Bordeaux for three months by the Government in Exile during the Franco-Prussian War, the Government returning to Versailles on March 10th. 1793 (Mar 15) Entire letter from Marseilles to London with "P12P / MARSEILLES" handstamp, intercepted in Paris where it was opened, censored and returned to the writer. Endorsed below the dateline in French "letters do not pass to enemies of the Republic", turned and readdressed back to Marseille charged 13 sols, an oval censor handstamp containing a Republican figure applied over the seal and endorsed in French "Returned to Sender". An exceptional service suspended letter, posted six weeks after France declared war against Britain. Photo on page 129. £750-900

D'ANGLETERRE" handstamp, and 2nd May private letter from Le Havre with two line "DON F / ARM. D'ANGLETERRE" handstamp. Kerguelen Island

1893 500fr Share Certificate (number 22) issued by the "Compagnie Generale de Iles Kerguelen, Saint-Paul et Amsterdam" signed by René Bossièrre, bearing a tax handstamp and the company handstamp. The company was formed by René and Emile Bossièrre in 1893 after the French Government granted them sole rights to exploit the natural riches of Kerguelen, St. Paul and Amsterdam Islands. The company went bankrupt in 1931, leaving seven employees stranded on St. Paul Island, five of whom died, the two survivors finally being rescued in 1934. An interesting and scarce item of ephemera. £120-150

1924 (Dec 1) Registered cover from Valros, France franked 85c, addressed to Max Laboule on board the "Cercolon" en-route to Kerguelen Island, backstamped at London (Dec 3), Cape Town (Apr 25) and Returned L.O Cape Town (Apr 27) with "RETOUR" cachet and boxed bilingual "POSTED OUT OF COURSE / TO PAY" (with manuscript "Cape Town, POOC 5/13"), also endorsed "no means of communication with Kerguelen Isles till October 1925" and "unknown at Kerguelen".
