Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1947 Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with Princess's Elizabeth and Margaret, 1938-44 ½d - 2d with three line overprint "ROYAL VISIT / 29TH APRIL / 1947" and ½d - 1/- with four line overprint "FIRST / ROYAL VISIT / 29th APRIL / 1947", fine mint, also four photos of the arrival of the royal party on the island. These unofficial overprints are known in three different styles, thought to be locally done by a relative of Governor Clark; it is said that the Governor gave a set to his brother. Scarce essay overprints, apparently done with the knowledge and probable authorisation of the Governor H.C Clarke, very few recorded. (13 + 4 photos). Photo on Page 148. £500-600

  Cape of Good Hope. 1828-45 Entires comprising 1844 part letter from Gordon Cumming, Cape Mounted Rifles who had been "into the interior to trade with the remote Kaffir tribes for cowries, ivory and ostrich feathers" posted from Grahams Town to Scotland with "SHIP LETTER / PLYMOUTH"; 1844-45 entires from England to "H.M.S "Thunderball", Cape of Good Hope" prepaid at the 8d ship letter rate (2, one with red Ventnor undated circle); and 1828 inland cover to Cape Town.   Cape of Good Hope. 1842 (May 12) "The Cape Frontier Times" newspaper No. 106 published in Grahams Town, bearing a 1d rose imperforate newspaper tax stamp which also paid the postage to England, addressed across the stamp to "His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury", partial Cape Town and London datestamps. The newspaper contains news of the death of the Kaffir Chief Tyali and the settlers relationships with the Kaffirs, forthcoming Albany races, etc. A rare early adhesive stamp paying postage, sent eleven years before the Cape issued postage stamps; the Burrus collection contained a slightly earlier example, described as the worlds first official postage stamp as it predated the V.R 1d black (sold for £420 in 1962). £400-500

  Cape of Good Hope. 1842 (June 30) "Grahams Town Journal" newspaper No. 552 published in Grahams Town, bearing a 1d rose imperforate newspaper tax stamp which also paid the postage, a Cape Town datestamp alongside the stamps, believed to have been posted to the Archbishop of Canterbury (address wrapper missing). The newspaper contains news of Kaffir incursions and thefts of cattle and oxen, and the Boer farmers resistance to British occupation of Natal. A rare early adhesive stamp paying postage, sent eleven years before the Cape issued postage stamps; the Burrus collection contained a slightly earlier example, described as the worlds first official postage stamp as it predated the V.R 1d black (sold for £420 in 1962). £300-400

Byford has been shipwrecked and lost everything and has been dangerously ill under the Doctors hands; he asks for five or six pounds to be sent as soon as possible to buy clothes and will the try to get work on board a ship again. £100-120
