  1847 (Nov 14) Entire letter from H.M Dockyard, Bermuda, headed "On H.M Service", addressed to The Secretary of the Admiralty, London, directed for The Director General Medical Dept., delivered free of charge, backstamped "IRELAND-ISLE / BERMUDA" (PM5, Nov. 20) and in London. James Walch has been ordered home to undergo the examinations for surgeon, and requests an appointment to a ship for his passage home. An unusual item, ex Ulrich. £240-280

Click to view full image... 1864 (Feb 11) Cover to Miss Helen Donaldson at Birch Cove, Nova Scotia, prepaid 4d with superb red "PAID / AT / IRELAND ISLE BERMUDA" crowned circle and "4d" rate handstamp, backstamped "IRELAND ISLE / BERMUDA" (PM5, Feb. 18) and at Halifax (Feb. 24). An attractive paperlace valentine card with two embossed angels is enclosed, also a letter from William Daking on H.M.S "Medea" reports their arrival from Rum Cay with two anchors and 200 fathoms of chain cable from the wreck of H.M.S "Conqueror", eleven named naval ships are in the harbour, two sailors from other ships have drowned, Capt. Croke of H.M.S "Vesuvius" has died. Fine and very rare, one of just four recorded examples of the handstruck "4d" (with one 1859 cover to Canada, three 1863-64 covers to Miss Donaldson in Nova Scotia). Newfoundland/France. 1878 (Aug 9) Cover from Paris to the Postmaster General, St. Johns, Newfoundland, endorsed "per Allan Steamer of the 12th August from Liverpool to St. Johns Newfoundland" franked at the 7f rate with 1870 siege 40c, 1871-75 80c (2) and 1869 5f grey tied by star cancels, Paris Rue D'Enghien c.d.s alongside and St. Johns backstamp (Aug 21). Small tear at base (easily repairable) and pressed diagonal fold which just crosses the 40c stamp. An exceptional rate and franking, the 5f almost certainly unique to Newfoundland.
