Ocean Drift Experiment Cards. 1954 Business Reply Cards dropped by aircraft off the West Coast of Ireland to test ocean currents, all found in the Faroe Islands and posted back to the National Institute of Oceanography in Surrey, two cards stampless (one with a 1½d charge mark), the others franked 12ore (3), 15ore (3), 30ore (5), 35ore (17), 40ore or 60ore in Danish stamps, cancels comprise Thorshavn (15), Kvalvig, Klaksvig, Nolso (2), Sumbo (2), Sand, Svino (3), Sorvaag (4) and Trangisvaag (2). Also a copy of the international report on the experiment, and a card posted at Pembroke Dock in 1957 inscribed "Possibly phoney, aircraft was based in Pembroke and from same bundle picked up in France in 1955". An interesting and scarce group; 98 cards were recovered in the Faroes. (33). £400-500

1850 (Apr 1) Cover from Versailles to England initially franked by 1849 Ceres 20c black strip of four cancelled by grill obliterators with red "PD" alongside, then apparently found to be a double weight cover with a second 20c strip of four applied at right over the "PD" handstamp, also cancelled by the grill obliterators with two further "PD" handstamps applied, Versailles, Paris, Calais, London Paid and Exeter datestamps. Six stamps are touched or cut into on one or two sides and a horizontal fold crosses two stamps, nevertheless unusual, a rare and appealing first issue franking. Photo on Page 156. £300-400

Boules des Moulin. 1871 (Jan 6) Entire letter from Lillebonne to Paris endorsed "Par Moulins Allier", the special 1f fee paid by 1863-70 20c pair and strip of three each cancelled "2047" with Lillebonne c.d.s alongside, backstamped Paris au Havre (Jan. 9) and Paris (Feb 18), finally delivered three weeks after the end of the siege.
