Mafia. c.1916 Cover to Zanzibar franked on the reverse with I.E.F ½a pair and 1a each cancelled by violet "G.R / POST / MAFIA" (S.G. type M4), green censor seal partly lifted to display the stamps. This Mafia handstamp was used as a cancellation from November 1915 until July 1916; it was then used as an overprinting device on mint stamps. A scarce commercial cover from Mafia Island, minor edge faults. Photo on Page 134. £500-700

Air Mails. 1928 (Feb. 12) Cover to England with Sudan 10m tied by Khartoum c.d.s, the reverse with "Entebbe Club, Uganda" embossed on the flap and endorsed "By air from Entebbe to Khartoum AJC". Cobham made his famous "round Africa" flight in a Short Singapore flying boat in 1927; no official mail was carried but he is known to have hand carried two covers from England to East Africa and three covers from Entebbe to Khartoum. An exceptionally rare cover from this important flight, a few insignificant opening tears, otherwise fine. Previously sold in the Argyll Etkin auction of 29th September 2017 (lot 945, realised £3,500). Photo on Page 134. £2,500-3,000

India 4a, rejoined pair each with a fine 1890 (Oct. 6) Mombasa c.d.s, left stamp stained and with small corner fault, the right stamp fine. India stamps were used at Mombasa from July until October 1890 after stocks of the GB overprint issue were sold out (due to the purchase by Whitfield King) and prior to the first regular B.E.A Co. issue on October 13th.
