Azores - "Tin Can" Mail. 1902-09 Picture postcards (20) and covers (3) from Norddeutscher Lloyd ships all sent ashore in the Azores, mails and money for postage being lowered in a sealed metal ball to a local whale boat and rowed to Velas where the mails were dealt with by the NDL agent. All franked by Angra stamps cancelled at Velas (20) or Angra do Heroismo (3), the seven 1902-04 items handstamped "Forwarded by / John C. Lacerda / Agent for the Norddeutscher / Lloyd, of Bremen, at / Vellas - S. Jorge - Azores" in violet (6) or red. Also picture postcards showing a mail cask being lowered to the whale boat (3) or the boat returning to shore with the mail (2), and associated postcards (8). An interesting and rare group, one 1902 card inscribed by the sender "By Bottle Post from the Azores Islands". (36). £600-700

Cape Verde. 1986 Set of three souvenir sheets each containing four 50$ stamps in differing colours, each stamp with "SPECIMEN" overprint, the first stamps since 1961 to be sent to the U.P.U with Specimen overprints and the last stamps of any country to be so distributed. After lengthy correspondence the ordinary stamps were returned by the U.P.U to the printers in Vienna in return for ordinary mint stamps, but the Specimen overprint souvenir sheets were distributed to member countries in May 1986.
