The ship is going to call at St. Helena; the writer will send leaves of the Willows from Napoleon's tomb. £100-120

Mead in London, from his mother who is about to leave the island for the Cape, with boxed "INDIA LETTER / PORTSMOUTH", charged 8d. The letter includes, "another slave vessel came in yesterday with 320 negros on board, this now makes about 1000 negroes on the island, what is to become of this place with such a set of creatures as they are, some people think it will be a bad thing for the island as many of them are a very treacherous race, I cannot write any good accounts of the island as it gets worse every day". Some splitting at folds, also partly split along a horizontal file fold, still a good looking address panel with the scarce "3½" Post Office handling fee. Photo on Page 222. £300-350

Click to view full image... 1844 (Apr. 2) Entire letter from William Kelly, Captain of H.M.S "Conway" at St. Helena, to Yorkshire, charged the 8d ship letter rate but unusually without any ship letter handstamp, backstamped at London and Wakefield. The "Conway" will shortly proceed to West Africa and serve on anti-slavery patrol for the next four months. He is sending back a magnificent chest of shells for distribution amongst the ladies. Red "ST. HELENA" and "LONDON / PAID" (Oct 11) datestamps and oval framed "PD", datestamps of Calais, Paris and Le Havre. Although stamps were issued in 1856 mail could still be prepaid in cash until 1872. This 1d bisect was authorised during a shortage of ½d stamps in February and March 1883; the Brookes collection contained one other example with this unusual three bar dumb cancel. Ex.
