1891 (Oct. 10) Large piece cut from a registered cover bearing ½a, 1a, 2a, 4a, 8a grey all tied by Mombasa datestamps, a further strike below with a red London Registered arrival datestamp. The scarce 8a crossed by a very light horizontal crease but otherwise fine, the other stamps all crossed with a heavier diagonal crease, 2a with small corner fault. A reasonable franking with the scarce 8a grey, from an apparently commercial cover, paying the three x 4½a rate + 2a registration fee. Photo on Page 204. £200-250

1892 (Mar. 28) Cover to Mrs Powell, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, franked 4½a dull violet tied by a Mombasa squared circle, with an intriguing pencil endorsement alongside "Paid 4½a ..... my a/c (initials), some overall soiling, pressed creases and minor edge faults, light crease through the stamp. Also 1892 (May 24) cover from Bishop Alfred R. Tucker to his son in London, initialled "A.E.Eq.A" (Alfred, Eastern Equatorial Africa) franked ½a tied by Mombasa squared circle, another stamp unfortunately removed (with a replacement 4a hinged in its place). Tucker went to Uganda as a C.M.S Missionary in 1890, was appointed Bishop of Equatorial Africa and later Bishop of Uganda. Two interesting and early covers from the interior of B.E.A or Uganda, both probably carried by caravan or runner to Mombasa. (2). £400-500

1 Anna on 4a brown, manuscript surcharge with initials "A.B", mint left marginal single, the surcharge in a differing hand to the usual surcharges (possibly the same hand used for many of the S.G.22 ½ anna surcharges), with the surcharge and "A.B" initials clearly in the same hand. With a 1975 letter from the dealer Peter Dickinson giving the opinions of Roy Dunston and Stuart Rossiter on this stamp, Dunston being of the opinion that a clerk wrote both the surcharge and initials (and not Archibald Brown), and the stamp is therefore not a forgery, but also not a genuine "A.B" initialling.
