  Rhodesia - Nyasaland Field Force. 1916 (Dec. 21) Stampless cover with enclosed letter, from Acting Capt. James H.L Vaughan, British South Africa Police, to his wife in Portugal, with "F.P.O / 1" c.d.s used at Old Njombe, censored, delivered without charge. The enclosed letter, headed "B.S.A Police, c/o Army Post Office, Broken Hill" (suggesting mail for the Rhodesia Column was still being forwarded via A.P.O 1 in Broken Hill) includes "Our aeroplane has just arrived, tremendous excitement, especially amongst the native troops as they have never seen one before, as a matter of fact many of my men have not either. Just as he passed over our camp he looped the loop, excitement was intense then, natives could not understand it. They say a bird can't do it, how then can a white man". An interesting letter, to an unusual destination. £200-250

Click to view full image... 1926 Alan Cobham London to Cape Town Survey Flight. 1926 Cover to London, endorsed by the Flight Engineer Arthur Elliott "London to Cape flight, Bulawayo 31.1.26" and signed A.B Elliott, hand carried by Elliott from London to Bulawayo and posted upon arrival, franked 2d cancelled by Bulawayo c.d.s (Feb. 1). Six covers were carried by Elliott and posted back to George Mason from stops en route, in Sudan, Northern Rhodesia (2, Ndola and Broken Hill), Southern Rhodesia (Bulawayo) and South Africa (2). A unique cover from this important pioneer flight and the first cover to be flown by air in Southern Rhodesia. Photo on Page 216. £2,400-2,800

Click to view full image... 1926 Alan Cobham Cape Town to London Return Survey flight. 1926 (Feb. 5) Long stampless cover addressed to London, inscribed "Rhodesia to London by Air, Alan Cobham & A.B Elliot, February 1926", with a Salisbury c.d.s, sent under cover to Arthur Elliott in Cape Town and carried by Elliott on the return flight to London, with an enclosed letter from H.M Barbour in Salisbury concerning this cover, and another cover to Barbour which was carried by Elliott on the outward flight from London and posted at Bulawayo, subsequently displayed in the window of H.M Barbour's shop in Salisbury (also a news cutting from a local Salisbury newspaper about this cover). The cover is endorsed with the places and dates of stops made on the flight, and has dated cachets of hotels stayed at in Assouan, Athens and Pisa, signed by Alan J. Cobham and Arthur B. Elliott (and one other), inscribed "Received at Croydon Aerodrome Sat. Mar 13th, S.L. Elliott". Issels, Chairman, The Rhodesian Aviation Co Ltd. Also a printed Prospectus for establishing a limited company, The Rhodesian Aviation Co. Ltd., which was to acquire the Rhodesian Aviation Syndicate; the share capital of £10,000 was not raised by the end of January 1928, and the limited company did not materialise for another two years. A unique advertising envelope from one of the earliest aviation companies in Southern Rhodesia; the accompanying prospectus showed it owned just two aeroplanes (one in transit from London) and had a single pilot. Click to view full image... 1911 KEVII 1d Red, prepared for use but not issued, with violet "SPECIMEN" handstamp type SH2 applied in St. Helena, fine mint. This stamp was printed in this large format in error, due to a misunderstanding in the order sent to De la Rue. Upon receipt in St. Helena the stamps were destroyed, a few copies however receiving this specimen handstamp, probably used in presentation sets. Very scarce, with B.P.A Certificate (2019). Slave Trade/Madagascar. 1717 (Jan. 27) Entire letter from James Hunter, Surgeon on a slave ship returning from Madagascar, written from "St De Lana" to his brother in Leeds, probably carried by an East India Co vessel to London and posted upon arrival with "25/FE" Bishop Mark, charged 4d. The letter includes "We arrived hear from the Cape of Good Hope being obliged by Charter of Party to deliver some of our slaves for ye use of the East India company ...... We left ye Island of Madagascar Decem ye 1st and brought captive from there 386 slaves. We was upon the island above five months before we got fully slaved and in ten weeks after ye date hearof expect to deliver them being our full cargo at Bonis Airs in ye Spanish West Indies ..... I left my good wellwisher and truly no less than experienced surgeon Mr Barcly at Madagascar last August 1716 he was a man in years and being super cargo and our Capts father in law went a grate way up in ye country to accomidate the King of Timmohriffe and settle a factory for trade so expostulated himself in his journey fell into delirium .....". The East India Co sanctioned the taking of slaves from Madagascar from 1716 to 1721; slaves could be bought for 10/- of goods, the EIC requiring nine slaves to be delivered for every £500 of goods exported to Madagascar. In 1716 two licences were granted, to the vessels "Hamilton" and "Mercury". Some soiling and splitting of folds, which have been repaired, but a historic letter with good content on the slave trade, only one earlier letter recorded from St. Helena with postal markings. Click to view full image... 1794 (May 19/20) Entire letter from James Crichton at St. Helena, addressed to Scotland endorsed "Pr Bombay Castle", containing two letters for his brother and mother, with London backstamp (July 23) and "LONDON / SHIP-LRE", charged 1/7. Also a letter of July 1st from St. Helena, no address panel. Crichton was surgeon to the EIC factory in China; he sailed as surgeon on the "Bombay Castle" in a convoy of 16 Indiamen to St. Helena where he left the ship until he could return to China on a store ship. Scarce early letters from St. Helena, the final letter written in July describing various ships that have called at the island, also the attractive young ladies he has met. Agents to Danish EI Compy, Plymouth 9 Nov 1805", with oval "SHIP-LETTER / (crown) / PLYMOUTH", charged 3/6. The letter describes the arrival and departure of various Indiamen, naval ships and whalers, this letter despatched on a Danish ship from Mauritius which is departing for Hamburg. John Mansel commanding the 2nd Battalion 53rd Foot, one of the regiments sent to the island to guard Napoleon, addressed to his sister in England with oval "Ship Lre / (crown) / EASTBOURNE", charged 1/6. The letter includes "Bonaparte is very quiet, he seldom shows himself and never comes out of his own grounds. I have not seen him a month. I have not forgotten the commission you gave me to procure some of his own handwriting but hitherto I have been unsuccessful in obtaining it, tho' Poppleton, the officer in waiting, has promised to get me some ever since I have been in the island". Packet Letter. 1816 (Aug. 19) Entire letter written by George Dunlop, Surgeon attached to the 2nd Battalion, 66th Foot, which served as part of the guard on Napoleon from 1816 until 1819, from Huts Gate Camp to Dunlop's father in Scotland. The address panel endorsed "Dunlop 66th Regiment", with a fine strike of the oval "ST HELENA / PACKET LETTER" datestamp (Aug. 24), fine "INDIA PACKET LETTER / G.P.O / LONDON" arrival datestamp (Oct. 16), charged 4/8. The letter includes "our camp was removed from Tag Late to Huts Gate last week on account of the badness of the weather. We are within a few yards of General Bertrands house and have frequent opportunities of seeing him. He is much liked in the island and highly esteemed by Napoleon. The ex Emperor still continues to live to himself, no person is admitted to see him; when the weather is better I have no doubt we shall see much more of him. He has I understand expressed a wish to be introduced to all our Officers". Closed tear to the address panel, nevertheless a fine strike of this rare Packet Letter datestamp, just 14 examples recorded between 1816 and 1820 (the Packet operating 1815-19).   1817 (June 17 - July 1st) Twelve page letter written by Lord Amherst (signed "A") to his wife, written en route to England following his unsuccessful diplomatic mission to the Emperor of China. Begun on the "Caesar" at sea en route to St. Helena, the final four pages written on the island. From St. Helena he writes "We are lodged with Sir Hudson and Lady Lowe .... he has spoken to me most confidentially respecting his important charge. I am in expectation of a visit from Count Bertrand and am told it is probable he will be the bearer of a message from Bonaparte appointing a time for my seeing him. He is suffering with a swelled face which I am informed is the only reason why he has not yet fixed an interview. I have rode all about Longwood, his residence and seen the bounds presented to him, it being Sir Hudson wish, since the debate upon that subject in the House of Lords, that I should be made acquainted with his exact situation. We are grossly deceived in England by the publication of Montholons letter, and by the exaggerated, I might say unfounded, reports of the treatment experienced by our prisoner". Click to view full image... 1817 (Oct. 10) Entire letter from George Dunlop, Surgeon with the 66th Foot, to his brother in Scotland, reporting the arrival of the first Battalion and the return of the second Battalion to England to be disbanded, Dunlop having been ordered to remain to do duty with the first Battn. until further orders. The letter includes "I have been introduced to Napoleon who addressed several questions to me. He is now become much more social than formerly and frequently rides out. It is the opinion of many here that he will be allowed to go to England in eight or ten years. He appears to be in bad health on account his being troubled with swelled legs, his limits are enlarged that he may have more exercise ..... Mardens account of Bonaparte is said to be very incorrect by those who came out with him and they give him credit for only about one half of what he states. Bony has seen it himself and is very much displeased at it". A good letter, privately carried to England and posted at Plymouth Dock, charged 1/3. Photo on Page 218. £600-800

The letter includes "we take the freedom to present a few Amboina shells and some arms belonging to the inhabitants of the S.W Coast of New Guinea or Papua ..... we had the pleasure to perceive your taste for curiosities ..... receive our highest thanks for the very kind reception we received at Plantation house". An extraordinary and unique local letter to the Governor; the "Triton" was returning to Europe after a voyage to New Guinea where they had founded Fort Du Bus on Triton Bay and declared the area a Dutch possession. St. Helena", backstamped with "MADRAS BEARING POSTAGE" datestamps. Dallas reports his move from Plantation House which was in an unhealthy location - "Dr Arnold says he thinks it was the cause of General Walker's death. I was lucky in having Buonaparte's house to go to ...... it is a most superb mansion and have got it painted and fitted up very handsomely". Doveton's reply is written inside in pencil.   1836 (Aug. 24 - Sep. 12) Entire letters from Mary Sampson (2), the first to a friend at the American Mission at Bombay begun on the "Ranger" bound from India to England and completed at St. Helena on Sept. 1st; the second written from the island on Sept 12th to her parents in New York. The letters describe the loss of her husband and her voyage back to the USA, her decision to leave the ship at St. Helena on the advice of the American Consul William Carrol who advised her to get a ship direct from the island to the USA, and her problems in finding a suitable passage; she has visited Napoleons tomb and his house at Longwood. The letter to Bombay redirected to Poona, backstamped "BOMBAY / POST NT PAID" and charged 4a; the letter to USA endorsed "pr Capt Reny Ship Eclipse" with faint Salem c.d.s, charged 20½c, this letter to the USA with a few faults and tear at base.
