EARLY PRESTAMP MAIL, 1698-1793 - EARLY BRITISH PERIOD - RARE EXETER "E" BISHOP MARK ON COVER TO G.B.; Remarkable 25 Jan. 1706/7 EL (folds to display internal heading beside address; some neatly strengthened folds and with minor dusting of the address panel and flaps barely detracts) from "Gibaralter" [sic] to Bristol charged "3[d]" (posted there as an inland letter and so without the Ship Letter fee of 1d) with a mainly very fine rare "E/MR/5" Exeter Bishop Mark (1698-1713; only used on Cross-Post letters such as this) on the top flap. Click to view full image... THE NAPOLEONIC WARS PERIOD, 1794-1815 - VERY RARE 1st-PERIOD BLACK USAGE OF "GIBRALTAR" ARC - ON COVER EX "[H.M.S.] AMPHION, MALTA"; 13 Feb. 1807 EL (from the Hoste correspondence; interesting contents) from "[H.M.S.] Amphion off Malta" to Norfolk charged "2/9" Packet + inland rates with a 90%-complete "GIBRALTAR" arc mark (slightly off the edge) nicely placed on the front; this mark was only used in black from Feb. to March 1807 before the Postmaster was instructed to use red ink, and so only 4 examples of this first black-ink period are known on covers (the black ink was reintroduced for this mark from 1831 to 1837 when a second similar mark was issued and again used in black until 1848). Cross Reference: MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR, MARITIME MAIL, MALTA, FALSE £400

Click to view full image... THE NAPOLEONIC WARS PERIOD, 1794-1815 - VERY RARE INCORRECT BLACK USAGE OF "GIBRALTAR" ARC - ON COVER EX "[H.M.S.] GLORY"; 20 July 1807 EL from "[H.M.S.] Glory, Gibraltar" to London charged "2/8" Packet + inland rates with a mainly fine "GIBRALTAR" arc mark (filing crease) nicely placed on the front; this mark was only used in black from Feb. to March 1807 before the Postmaster was instructed to use red ink, and this July 1807 example appears to have been struck in error as no other black examples are known between March 1807 and 1831 (black ink was reintroduced for this mark from 1831 to 1837 when a second similar mark was issued and that was again used in black until 1848). There is a faint trace of red ink in the mark at right suggesting that red ink had also been in use on this date. Cross Reference: MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR £300

Click to view full image... THE NAPOLEONIC WARS PERIOD, 1794-1815 - MOROCCO - EARLY LETTER FROM TANGIER TO SPAIN EXAMINED IN GIBRALTAR SECRETARY's OFFICE; Fine 30 July 1807 EL (in English ref. trade & insurance) from "Tanger" to Xerez (via Gibraltar) with mainly very fine red 3-rine "S. ROQUE./ANDALUCIA/BAXA" (filing fold) on the front with no postal rate apparent. A Proclamation from the Gibraltar Secretary in October 1807 declared that all letters for Spain should be sent via his office (for censorship) but it seems likely that this letter was similarly treated. 1807 mail from Gib to Spain is rare and this is an unusual cover from Morocco in this period. Cross Reference: MOROCCO, SPAIN £240

Click to view full image... THE NAPOLEONIC WARS PERIOD, 1794-1815 - EARLY RED "GIBRALTAR" ARC COVER + MATCHING COVER WITH MARK OMITTED; 12 Dec. 1807 EL (slight toning) from "Gibraltar Bay" ("...the Packet is under way...") to London charged "5/4" (double Packet rate) with London "FOREIGN" backstamp but not Gibraltar mark; plus similar 16 May 1808 EL (slight speckling of address panel; disinfection?) from "Gibraltar" to London (for Madeira) charged "5/4" with the London backstamp but also with a very fine red "GIBRALTAR" arc nicely placed on the front. During 1807 there was considerable change and chaos in the Gibraltar P.O. which may explain the lack of a mark on this 1807 cover. (2 covers) Cross Reference: MADEIRA £150
