Click to view full image... STAMPLESS MAIL, 21 Aug. 1857 - 1875 - MAIL TO G.B. - THE VERY RARE 4-LINE "Posted unpaid and opened...out of Gibraltar...charged with fine" MARK IN BLACK; Small c.1890(?) piece (faults) with a mainly very fine strike of this extraordinary 4-line mark in black; "Posted unpaid and opened/in due course, but having/originated out of Gibraltar/forwarded charged with fine" (two words of the bottom line affected by damage). This appears to be a piece of a postcard, and has the remains of an orange postage stamp and Duplex (S. American??) on the reverse along with a small part of the same 4-line mark - it does not appear to be a Proof strike. This mark was introduced for the start of compulsory prepayment of mail to G.B. from 1 March 1858, and was in use until 1865 (but may have been reintroduced later as suggested by this piece); only three covers and three pieces are recorded. This is only recorded pieces with the mark in black. [A similar strike on piece but in red, ex the Barclays Collection, was sold at auction in April 2010 for £780.] Plus an 1863 Gibraltar Bill of Exchange and a fine printed 10-page 1876 GB/Spain Postal Convention.
