MADEIRA - MAIL TO GB - 1st-TYPE "MADEIRA" MARK WITH VERY RARE LONDON FOREIGN BRANCH "PORT/BRITISH" MARK; Remarkable 26 July 1807 EL (minor toning) from "Ship Ardent, Madeira" to Scotland with a mostly fine large "MADEIRA" mark (FUN 1; v. early usage) on the front, overstruck by a partly fine red "LISBON" mark, having a very fine London "PORT/BRITISH" mark (matching the 25 Sept. "FOREIGN" c.d.s. on the flap) on the front. There are red "40" (Portuguese 40 reis rate to Lisbon)and black "2/8" charges in manuscript on the front; the "PORT/BRITISH" mark was supposed to show the break-down of the final 2s-8d rate between the Portuguese and British components, but in this case this was not done. Very rare; only a handful of this "PORT/BRITISH" mark have been recorded. Important Exhibition Item. Sold in our Nov. 2004 sale for £1100 Cross Reference: SHIPS/SHIPPING, PORTUGAL £750
