C.D.S.; 12 April 1843 EL (outer wrapper professionally backed with fine tissue; long family letter written while en route to India) charged "1/-" Packet rate to Newcastle on Tyne, having a fine "MADEIRA" cds (12 May) on the flap, beside a mostly very fine green undated "GIBRALTAR/F" mark of Falmouth (recorded undated 1840-3 only). GIBRALTAR MAILS OF THE 1840s - MAIL TO SARDINIA - THE VERY RARE TINY RED "GIBRALTAR" ARC MARK - ONE OF ONLY NINE RECORDED; Very fine 15 Sept. 1845 EL from "Gibilterra" to Genoa "P. [Ship] Barcino" with a mainly very fine tiny red arc-framed "GIBRALTAR" mark (filing fold) nicely placed on the front with manuscript "26" arrival charge and "VIA DI NIZZA". This unusual mark was used by Mr. Mitchell, the Civil Secretary's Postmaster in Gibraltar only on letters that he despatched by private foreign ships to prevent their being sent other than through the official Gibraltar channels. This is one of only nine recorded examples, and is very unusual on mail to Italy. Exhibition Quality. Very few examples of this charge-mark have been recorded; it is much rarer than the similar Handstruck "6" mark, and only appears to have been recorded in blue for 1852-3. THE FINAL PRESTAMP PERIOD, 1850 - 20 Aug. 1857 - MAIL TO SPAIN - THE VERY RARE TINY RED "GIBRALTAR" ARC MARK - LATEST KNOWN OF ONLY NINE RECORDED; Very fine 9 Apr. 1851 EL from "Gibraltar" (v. fine blue double-oval sender's "SHIP BROKERS/GIBRALTAR" cachet on the front) to Cadiz "P. Estafeta" with a partly fine (partly albino) tiny red arc-framed "GIBRALTAR" mark nicely placed on the front with handstruck red "1R" arrival charge and fair matching Cadiz backstamp. This unusual mark was used by Mr. Mitchell, the Civil Secretary's Postmaster in Gibraltar only on letters that he despatched by private foreign ships to prevent their being sent other than through the official Gibraltar channels. This is the latest known date of the nine recorded examples. Exhibition Item. THE FINAL PRESTAMP PERIOD, 1850 - 20 Aug. 1857 - MAIL TO SPAIN - VERY RARE COVER FORWARDED WITH PAMPILLON PRIVATE LETTER CARRIER LABEL; Fine 23 Sept. 1856 EL (in English) from "Gibraltar" to "Xerez de la Frontera" endorsed "P. Vapor Ligero" and so sent by an Agent to Cadiz where the letter was handed to the semi-legal Private Letter Carrier "Francisco Pampillon" with his rare printed "recoje [collect letters from] calle de la Caridad, junto al Estanco [next to the tobacconist]" label (slight stain but clearly belongs) on the front. Nathan (1976) only recorded a handful of covers with this label, and David (2010) only recorded three other such covers carried from Gibraltar and by the Private Letter Carriers.
