Click to view full image... 5ins gauge Southern Region L1 Class 4-4-0 steam locomotive "Maid of Kent"
Originally built by R K Boardman between 1948 and 1953 to the LBSC design. At the 1953 Model Engineer Exhibition it took the highest award for its class a bronze medal. Now in only it's second (Chartered Engineer) ownership after its purchase direct from Mr Boardman in 1999. Having lain boxed up for 30 years the next 3 years saw a sympathetic restoration preserving most of the original mechanical parts and very fine paintwork where possible. This restoration has been meticulously recorded in the comprehensive history file. On completion of the restoration the engine was entered in the 2001 Model Engineer LBSC Memorial Bowl Competition and duly took 2nd prize. The history file contains all of the original ME magazine construction articles, the original engineering blueprints, much correspondence from and to Mr Boardman, original receipts and invoices, the 1953 Bronze Medal award, original photos, prize certificates and the fully recorded restoration. There is also a well written account of the purchase from Mr Boardman and the subsequent history, there are various 1953/54 ME articles chronicling the bronze medal award and subsequent comment from judges and designer alike. The engine is offered with its original tender and display rail, a braked driving truck based on a double bogie box wagon c/w engine operating equipment, footrests for ground level running, transport boxes and a very useful 360 degree turnover jig. The engine is offered for sale due to it becoming unwieldy for its owner and various other projects, only lightly used and completely unused for the last 3 years. A museum quality 63 year old engine with a fully documented history, one of the finest offered in recent years.
