Reg. No. BF 6879
Chassis No. 1551G
Albion was founded in Glasgow in 1899 and sold over 6,500 vehicles to the War Department during WW1 and, as a good will gesture, bought back 1,500 vehicles after the war effort taking five years to resell them as a reconditioned truck, bus etc.
This spectacular vehicle was restored in 2014, by the present owner, after being found on a farm in Essex, as a rusty rolling chassis, fitted with a fire engine water pump. It had matching chassis, engine, gearbox along with a brass caution and chassis plates. 1551G is recorded as being new in 1916 on the copy factory build sheet supplied and information from the Biggar Albion Archives shows it as never being road registered. The chassis, engine and gearbox numbers all match as 1551G. The 32hp four cylinder petrol engine has been fitted with new white metal cast big ends and main bearings, the crankshaft has been reground from standard to -3 thou, along with new cylinder liners, new piston rings on the original cast iron pistons, reconditioned oil pump, new valves, springs and guides, new clutch plate and reconditioned magneto. Beyond the engine there are new drive wheel chains, new exhaust system, new old stock Dunlop solid tyres, new cast alloy radiator with new radiator core and a new leaded steel petrol tank. The fully working Miller oil lighting has W^D stamped on all lights, and the vehicle is equipped with bulb horn, mirror, jack, manual hand indicator and ELC front lights with carbide generator on the drivers running board.
This Albion vehicle is understood to be the only one in war department colours in the UK, along with one in Australia and one in Turkey. 1551G has been used in films and TV series in the last few years which include Testament Of Youth, Harriet's Army, and Godzilla and would be a great asset for future film work. The 2018 celebrations of the end of First World War may also provide opportunities for work and show.
At the time of cataloguing the Albion had just been engaged for an episode of the BBC production of Peaky Blinders.
Fitted with a troop seating area that can be collapsed for an ammunition cargo it is ideal for social jollies with the canopy sheet sides on or removed on sunny pub outing days. The vendor has stated that he would be happy to show the new owner the starting and running controls and is absolutely confident that it can be driven home (if you're not in a hurry!). Offered for sale with current V5C document and documents file.
Estimate: £38,000 - £42,000 (+ Fees*)

Reg. No. BF 7455
Chassis No. 960E
Albion was founded in Glasgow 1899 and introduced the model A16 in 1914. Production ceased during the First World War in order to concentrate on the larger A10 models. After 1918 the factory carried on where it had left off with the A16 model until 1920 when it introduced the Models A20, A24 etc. This beautiful example with matching chassis, engine and gearbox numbers (960E) was sold new to the New Zealand Government for the use of the High Commissioner as is shown on the copy build sheet obtained from the Biggar Albion Archives. 960E was repatriated from New Zealand in 2002 as a complete rusty rolling chassis only, all duties were paid and a NOVA certificate was issued prior to UK road registration after its full restoration as a Charabanc in 2016 by the present owner. The 20hp petrol, four cylinder, twin block engine has been fitted with new cast white metal big ends, main bearings, new piston rings on original cast iron pistons, new cylinder liners, reconditioned oil pump, new valves, guides, springs and reconditioned magneto. Other work includes the fitting of a new prop shaft, new old stock Dunlop tyres, new cast alloy radiator and new radiator core, new leaded petrol tank and a fully working Lucas oil lighting set. With seating for up to twelve persons it is kitted out with full weather roll down side screens when needed and is an absolute certainty for future film and TV work having already starred in the TV series Houdini and Doyle during 2016. An ideal country estate or other rural attraction tour bus that can be put to work straight away.
The vendor states that he would be happy to show the new owner the starting and running controls and that this is a drive away opportunity as well as a unique one. Offered for sale with V5C documentation and documents file.

STEAM ENGINES

Click to view full image... Robey Portable Steam Engine. No 15596. Built 1895. Single Cylinder.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Robeys of Lincoln built thousands of portable steam engines, some for the home market, but most were exported to all parts of the globe. This early example has been identified as No. 15596 of 1895 although the Traction Engine Register has it down as 15598. It is thought to be a 4nhp engine and is of the earlier four guide bar design. The engine spent its entire working life in South America and was repatriated in comparatively recent years. Colin Knight purchased the engine from Richard Pocock in 2002/3. The engine is now in a dismantled state with most of the major components appearing to be present including a new firebox, not yet welded/riveted or fitted. The many parts are not badly corroded and will polish and clean up well. Another not too daunting restoration project which will make a very attractive portable.
Estimate: £2,000 - £3,000 (+ Fees*)

Click to view full image...Click to view full image...Click to view full image... Fowler Class DNA "Hercules" Steam Tractor.
No. 17293. Reg. No. UA 2464 Built 22/12/1927. Double crank compound. Two speed. Sprung front and rear. Cylinders 5 1/4"x 9" x 9". 28 x 2" Firetubes.
In the early 1920s, Fowlers designed and built a new compact, efficient light road engine which they named the "Hercules" tractor. With a large firebox to facilitate free steaming, the engine was more robust and powerful than the "Tiger" tractor, yet lighter and more manoeuvrable than a road locomotive. They had a good turn of speed and were fitted with Macintosh solid rubber tyres from new. This example No. 17293 was supplied new to R. Groom and Sons Ltd of High Wycombe, Bucks and Wellington, Salop for general haulage work. In 1935, she moved to the Midlands and was in the ownership of Thomas E. Cunliffe for only a year before passing to the well-known heavy haulage contractors Marston Road Services associated with Edward Box and Co of Liverpool. She worked with the well-known Fowler B6 Crane Loco no. 17106 "The Duke of York", known to her drivers as the "Big Engine". In 1946, after ten hard years with Marstons, the "Little Engine" found its way to the Liverpool scrapyard of J. Puddifer. It was during this period, that she lost her front wheels and axle, which was fitted to the Burrell tractor of Johnsons of Banks. She was saved for preservation by C. Wood and Son of Hincaster, Cumbria in 1981, before passing to Martin Saunders of Sunningdale, Berks in 1985. Colin Knight bought the engine in a dismantled condition in the late 1980s and commenced the restoration project. A new "Deepdale" boiler barrel has been fitted to the outer firebox shell and a new corrugated firebox crown (by Stuart Woodbine) is present along with new belly tanks and tender which are yet to be riveted. A new crankshaft along with most of the key components required to complete the restoration of this rare and historic engine.
Estimate: £30,000 - £40,000 (+ Fees*)

Click to view full image... Fowler Class DN1 10 ton Steam Roller
No. 14127 Reg. No. YA 792 Built 1919. Double crank compound.
John Fowler and Co of Leeds built a vast array of different types of steam engine and in great quantities. They were known for their fine quality and excellent engineering. Towards the end of their steam engine production, their steam rollers continued to remain popular well into the 1930s. This class DN1, rated at about 5nhp, was new to Minehead District Council where it worked in their fleet. It is known to have worked in the London area during World War II, ending its working life in the Bristol area, where it was last licensed. Colin Knight bought the engine from an owner in Herefordshire in the late 1980s.
Colin started a comprehensive restoration in parallel with the Hercules tractor, being a very similar engine. A new "Deepdale" boiler barrel was fitted, retaining the original firebox which was thought to be still serviceable. A new tender and belly tanks were made (yet to be riveted) along with sundry new bearings. Sadly Colin did not complete the restoration, but it is thought that most of the parts are present to complete the job. There is a file of drawings and paperwork that go with this engine and the tractor.
Estimate: £15,000 - £20,000 (+ Fees*)

Click to view full image... 1917 Fowler 'Haulage Engine' Class TE2
No. 14910. Reg. No. CT9092. Double crank compound. 8NHP
The class TE2 was a special haulage and winding engine designed by Fowlers, mainly for military applications. They were very similar to the R3 road locomotive, but carried a small winding drum in place of belly tanks and were generally two speed engines. They were often referred to as Russian Fowlers due to a large order placed by the Russian government in 1917.
No. 14910 was one of a batch of 75 class TE2 engines allocated works numbers 14908-82, ordered by the Ministry of Munitions in 1917. After the war all the engines along with other classes were sold off cheaply to private buyers as redundant stock, which caused a major slump to the traction engine market in the years to follow.
It is not known where number 14910 spent its working life but it is said to have had its winding drum removed before it left Fowlers. However the engine is known to have been with Reynolds of Tickhill, Yorkshire in the late 1940s. Reynolds had a number of big Fowlers and introduced several to the preservation scene. After a period of time in the ownership of Jim Massey, the Fowler was bought by Stuart & David Gray of Cambridge in 1972. It was in their ownership that the major restoration took place which included new boiler barrel, firebox etc by Bicknells. Along with excellent engineer Roger Cheshire a meticulous restoration was carried out. Apart from a short period with the Barrington family in Kent who fitted a set of belly tanks, the Fowler has been carefully dry stored and is still in excellent condition. The Fowler has just been hydraulic tested and comes with a current boiler certificate.

Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1901 Burrell 7nhp General Purpose Traction Engine
No. 2421.
Reg. No. EB 3051. Single cylinder. Rear springs. "Old Glory"
The Thetford firm of Charles Burrell and Sons Ltd built a range of steam engines from the mid-19th century through to the late 1920s, the last engines being built by Garretts of Leiston in the early 1930s. Burrells settled on an excellent basic design of engine in the early 1890s and continued to refine and improve it until they ceased production. They are regarded by many as being the most aesthetically pleasing of all traction engines. This handsome example of their single cylinder general purpose traction engine was built in 1901 and sold to William Adamson of Errol, Perthshire, Scotland. It was sold to Garretts in 1911 who traded it to Thurlows of Stowmarket in the same year. It then passed to owners in Ely, Cambridgeshire where it worked for a number of years and gained its Isle of Ely County Council registration number EB 3051. After moves to Lincolnshire and Rutland, it attended early steam rallies in the ownership of W.H. Dorman of Bunny, Notts where it probably gained its name "Old Glory". Dormans sold it to the Felstead family of Loughborough in the late 1950s where it continued to be displayed for a few more years. Now needing some work, it was laid up for several decades before being sold in 1997. The current owner bought "Old Glory" in 2001 and carried out some substantial restoration work which included a new front tube plate, tubes, smokebox and stainless chimney. In conjunction with the then owner of the very similar 7nhp Burrell "Old Faithful", he had a brand new half canopy made to Burrell drawings with the correct distinctive ironwork. With its 6'6" rear wheels and 4'2" front wheels, this Burrell stands well and is a fantastic looking engine. The owner is meticulous about boiler maintenance and the engine has been very well looked after. The next hydraulic test is due in 2022 and the engine has a current boiler certificate until January 2018.
Estimate: £120,000 - £130,000 (+ Fees*)

Click to view full image... 1919 Wallis and Steevens Traction Engine. No. 7683.
7nhp Single Cylinder (Expansion type) "Eileen the Erring"
Reg. No. BL 795
If ever a traction engine could be described as "iconic", "Eileen the Erring" would be a top contender. In the hands of Doc Giles Romanes, this famous Wallis and Steevens traction engine took part in the first traction engine races at Nettlebed, Oxon in 1951 against the Marshall of Arthur Napper, the man responsible for the traction engine rally as we know it today.
Wallis and Steevens of Basingstoke exhibited this 7nhp traction engine at the Newbury Show on the 12th August 1919 and sold it to a local man A.C. Cole of Woodhay in Berkshire. The engine was named "Eileen" after the drivers daughter. In 1928, she was sold to a neighbour H.W. Henderson also of Woodhay before passing to the Hampshire War Agricultural Executive Committee in 1939. Giles Romanes a young, newly qualified eye surgeon from nearby Bray bought Eileen for preservation in 1947 and it was to be the first of several engines owned by him.
On his way to the famous race, Giles was stopped by the police in Henley on Thames for carrying a motorcycle on the trailer he was towing (transport to get home). This was deemed as not being agricultural equipment. He was later prosecuted and fined £5! The headline in the local Maidenhead Weekly read "Eileen the Erring", which was later adopted as the engines name.
Giles sold the Wallis in 1958 to Frank Upton of Maidenhead who in 1976 sold it to Ray Osborne of West Tilbury, Essex. The following year the engine was fitted with a new firebox. Since that time Eileen has attended local rallies and has always been meticulously maintained and presented. It carries a current boiler certificate dated 03/05/16 and the next hydraulic test is due in 2018. The engine requires re-tubing and a full set of new tubes is included.

Click to view full image... 1922 McLaren 8nhp Road Locomotive No. 1713
Reg. No. NH 3998. Double crank compound. Fully sprung. Three speed.
The company of John and Henry McLaren was founded in 1876 and established their works in Hunslet, Leeds, next door to Fowlers. They developed a range of traction engines, steam rollers and ploughing engines before moving to diesel engines in the early 1930s. They were renowned and highly respected for their rugged engineering quality, producing a strong and efficient engine which won many awards both at home and abroad. McLarens had a good overseas market with over 50% of their products exported. Arguably their most respected engines were the immensely powerful road locomotives of which No. 1713 is one of only two UK supplied 8nhp engines to survive. Originally built as a crane locomotive, the engine was supplied new to the Smith Timber Company of Northampton in 1922. After a relatively short period of time, it passed to Northampton Corporation where it continued to work until the late 1940s, when it was sold to the timber contractors Wards of Wolsingham, Co Durham. Wards already had a similar size 8nhp compound McLaren traction engine. In the early 1960s Dryden Ward converted No 1713 in to a showman's engine and named it "General French". Now painted maroon, the engine then passed to Marriots in Yorkshire, before crossing the Irish Sea to join the collection of the Lord O'Neal in the early 1970s. In his ownership, the McLaren was fitted with a new heavily constructed firebox by the well-known Belfast engineers Rory Woolf. When the honourable gentleman bought the Burrell Scenic Showmans engine "Quo Vadis", the McLaren now named "Banshee", was sold in the 1980s to the Birch family of Sellinge, Kent, who rallied it for many years. It is the intention of the family to revert the engine back to its original road locomotive form. It is described by the owners as being in good, sound mechanical condition and has several years to run on the hydraulic cycle. McLaren engines are currently extremely popular and highly sought after. This example is certainly one of the most important, and potentially most valuable.

"Horsa" and "Hengist".
Reg. Nos. AD 8990 and AD 8991. Built 1918. 16 NHP. Weight approx. 18 Tons. Double Crank Compound cylinders. Fitted with cast iron plates bearing the inscription "Registered by Gloucester County Council Nos 223 and 224"
This pair of ploughing engines were originally ordered by G.W. Stephens of Dumbleton, Gloucestershire through the Ministry of Munitions. In September 1918 the order was transferred by the Board of Agriculture to the Winchcombe Steam Plough Company, Greet, near Winchcombe, Glos, who operated the engines and original tackle for the Gloucester War Agricultural Executive Committee.
In September 1938, the engines were sold to the well-known contractors Bomford and Evershed of Salford Priors, Warwickshire and then subsequently in 1957 to Bomford and Carr Ltd of Binton, Warwickshire. In 1967 they were sold to Mr Bob Say of Cheddar for preservation. In his ownership they attended rallies and featured at working demonstrations at the Great Dorset Steam Fair in the 1970s until 1980 when they required boiler work. In 1998 the Fowlers were purchased by the present owners at the Cheffins Vintage Sale.
After purchase, both engines had fire bars and tubes removed for a full boiler inspection. They were both considered to be in similar condition and required virtually identical work. The firebox, tender and smokebox needed replacement, but the boiler barrels were both found to be in good order. The front tube plates were also sound with only a small amount of wastage on the flange.
While "Hengist" was left totally complete and untouched, No. 15210 "Horsa" was fully renovated between April 1998 and August 1999. All the boiler work was carried out by Israel Newton to the satisfaction of the boiler inspector Mr John Glaze. A number of gears were refurbished by B and C Gears. The rear axle was completely refurbished including drive pins by Bicknells. All the motion work was fully renovated and meticulously polished taking many hours over many weeks. Since renovation the engine has been steamed less than a dozen times, appearing only at the Onslow Park Rally in 1999 and 2000, winning best engine in show on both occasions, it comes with a full hydraulic certificate. Now offered as a pair of engines with Hengist requiring restoration.
