1920 TILLSOIL 18-30 TRACTOR Serial No. 176 This is an extremely rare machine and one of just six surviving examples worldwide. Serial number 176, it is the second oldest in existence and currently the only Tillsoil tractor outside of North America. The Tillsoil 18-30 was the brainchild of Byron G 'Barney' Baker, who was the Minneapolis agent for J I Case before eventually moving to Western Canada to work for Rumely. In 1918, he persuaded David Robb of Robb Engineering, Amherst, Nova Scotia, to join him in a new venture to develop the Tillsoil tractor. The Robb-Baker Tillsoil 18-30 was unveiled at a ploughing match near Amherst on 8 October 1918. Baker highlighted the five principles behind its design: power, durability, reliability, accessibility and economy. The tractor had a strong channel-iron mainframe, and the power came from a horizontal two-cylinder engine, which was a valve-in-head design. The dimensions of the gasoline/kerosene (petrol/paraffin) unit were 7in bore by 8in stroke running at 625 to 700 rpm. Power was 18hp at the drawbar and 30hp at the belt. Unfortunately, before the tractor could go into production, Robb Engineering ran into financial difficulty. Barney Baker had to find a new way to bring the Tillsoil to the market. Forming Canadian Tillsoil Farm Motors Ltd in 1920, he came up with an ingenious plan to establish a number of tractor schools across Canada to teach students about operating, servicing and repairing tractors. Tuition was $25 for the course, and each intake group built its own tractor and then tested it on a local farm. The castings were probably supplied from Amherst by the Dominion Bridge Company, which had purchased Robb Engineering. The tractor schools not only financed Baker's Tillsoil venture, but also built the tractor for him. Barney also promoted the tractor and the schools at many of the fairs and exhibitions across the Prairies. The Tillsoil 18-30 was advertised until 1921. No production records exist, but the serial numbers of surviving tractors suggest production began at No. 101, as was commonplace within the industry, and that probably less than 150 were built. This machine came to the UK in 2007 after being purchased from the dispersal auction of George Schaaf's Truck & Tractor Museum in Frankfurt, Illinois - an incredible sale of some very rare machines that broke several records for prices realised. At least three of the other five surviving Tillsoil tractors are in museum collections in Canada and the USA, and are unlikely to come to the market, which makes this a unique opportunity for the serious collector.

1957 DAVID BROWN DB5 diesel CRAWLER TRACTOR An incredible opportunity to acquire what is possibly the rarest of all the David Brown tractors and one of just two known survivors. Furthermore, this is the pre-production prototype of a model that was never released to the marketplace. The DB5 was born out of a David Brown project to develop a dedicated industrial crawler tractor with a potential market for 500 machines per year. The original concept was finalised during 1955. Based on accepted industrial tracklayer practice, the mainframe and transmission casing were constructed from fabricated steel to withstand heavy shock loadings and to allow for the direct attachment of a wide range of earthmoving equipment. The engine, David Brown's trusty 50hp six-cylinder AD6 unit, was flexibly mounted on three-point suspension within the channel-section frame and was connected to the gearbox via a cardan shaft. The six-speed gearbox was a fully-enclosed unit bolted to the front of the main transmission casing. The transmission housing, which carried the gearbox on its front face and the final drive casings on the sides, enclosed the steering assemblies with a driveshaft to the rear power take-off. The final drives were by reduction spur gears. In a break from the usual David Brown tradition, the tractor had clutch-and-brake steering. This system was preferred by operators for earthmoving operations, and it incorporated multi-plate steering clutches assisted by band-brakes. Two or possibly three prototype tractors were assembled for trials during 1956. The trials, held on Crosland Moor above Huddersfield, were carried out with scrapers and bulldozer attachments. Following the trials, modifications were made to the design and the final production specification was drawn up on 24 October 1957. The original prototypes were scrapped, but another eight or nine pre-production machines were assembled to the new specification. However, the project was almost immediately cancelled due to reasons of cost, and the handful of existing pre-production tractors were either retained for test purposes or sold to preferred customers. This machine, fitted with David Brown's own hydraulic angle dozer attachment, was the last to be sold, and it was dispatched in 1961 to Dick Turner, a plant operator in Holmfirth. It was later rescued for preservation by Jack Braithwaite and was the prize of his collection. The only other surviving DB5 went to New Zealand for evaluation. It remains in the hands of an NZ collector, and is unlikely ever to return to the Northern Hemisphere, making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of these enormously scarce machines. The picture above is believed to be the actual machine in the sale, the DB5 being put through its paces during its original evaluation trials on Meltham Moor with David Brown's demonstrator, Bob Marsh, at the controls.

DAVID BROWN 40TD diesel CRAWLER TRACTOR The David Brown 40TD crawler was introduced in May 1959, and was powered by the four-cylinder TD4/40 engine developing 42.5hp. Several of the machines were adapted into tracked loaders using German Meiller equipment. Production continued until January 1963 with less than 150 tractors built. This machine represents the beginning of Jack Braithwaite's relationship with David Brown. In May 1964, while looking to buy a crawler-loader for his plant-hire business, Jack heard that a machinery dealer from Gildersome, near Leeds, had purchased the last three David Brown 40TD front-end shovels directly from the factory. The tractors, fitted with Meiller loaders, had been sold off cheaply after David Brown ended crawler production. Jack bought all three machines for £2,200 each, and their first job was for Naylor Brothers Clay Products at Cawthorne, near Barnsley. They were also used on excavation work for Huddersfield Council, and were eventually replaced by Fiat FL6 crawler-loaders. After retiring from the business, Jack rekindled his interest in David Brown, and managed to repurchase one of his original 40TD Meiller shovels. The machine had been used in a drift-mine before ending up in the hands of the West Yorkshire DB Case dealership, Buckley (Clayton West) Ltd. Jack also purchased a second 40TD Meiller shovel, which had spent much of its working life in Holland, and both machines were extensively restored. One of these two tractors is being offered in the sale.

DAVID BROWN 50TD diesel TRACTOR Fitted with a front-end shovel - thought to date back from the late 1950s and one of only two fitted with Blaw-Knox equipment. Jack Braithwaite acquired the tractor in 2002 from a Somerset farmer who had bought it in the early 1960s but laid it up soon afterwards after the oil pressure dropped while working on the job. After residing in an orchard for 40 years, the machine was nearly derelict when Jack acquired it. It was restored over 4 months during the summer of 2002 with Jack working on it every single day. An interesting tractor requiring a full engine rebuild.

DAVID BROWN VIG/100 'Thresherman 4cylinder petrol/paraffin TRACTOR Serial No. H10071 These much admired machines were converted from RAF heavy towing and winching tractors, to help boost the post war food effort due to a shortage of machines nationwide. Their main duties were as a static power plant to help drive belt driven implements and machines such as threshing drums. This stunning Thresherman has been the subject of an extensive two year restoration project, with a lot of time spent sourcing and fabricating parts. An example of this would be a cost of £4,000 alone for the new wings all round that have been expertly reproduced. The tractor has retained its original India rear and Firestone front tyres, adding to the tractors originality. It is fitted with a David Brown rear winch (requiring steel cable), front belt pulley and has been repainted to a very high standard. Ready to be shown off at the shows and rallies this tractor would be the desire of many a collector and enthusiast. Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx2Aw3jo4-c to see this tractor in action.
