NEW ZEALAND - RARE "PAID AT/KORORARIKA/--N.Z--" (OF RUSSELL) IN RED ON "SHIP LETTER" TO G.B.; Fine 22/24 Aug. 1842 EL (large part long Missionary report) from "Mangungu" to London with a mainly fine (for this) very rare red boxed "PAID AT/KORORARIKA/--N.Z--" nicely placed on the front, charged "8" with a mainly fine black London "SHIP LETTER" with red arrival cds (9 May 1843) on the top flap; probably carried to Sydney and then forwarded on 'Supply' (Capt. Brown). The letter notes difficulties in learning the Maori language and lists "Members in our Society in Mangungu, Waima, Newark, Wairoa, Kaipara & Auckland". This first Russell marking is rare. [A much poorer strike in Cavendish's June 2016 'Capt. Ward' auction - lot 281 - realised £1,320.]

HANDSTRUCK "4" ON INGOING COVER EX G.B.; 31 May 1844 EL (light stains) from London to Auckland (family letter written by two people) with v. fine red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/LONDON" d.s. on the reverse with red m/s "8[d]" rate; probably routed via Sydney (no markings) but having a mainly very fine large 1st-Type "NEW-ZEALND" cds (15 Nov.) on the front beside a very fine distinctive small matching black Handstruck "4", presumably struck at Auckland but not apparently previously recorded. Rare example of the early 4d incoming Ship Letter charge. [Ex Capt. Ward.]
