Click to view full image... WORLDWIDE MILITARY POSTAL HISTORY - 2nd OPIUM WAR - UNIQUE(?) SHANGHAI NAVAL 9d-RATE COVER WITH "OFFICER IN CHARGE OF COMMUNICATIONS/[Crown]" BAGSEAL; [c.1 Aug.] 1859 env. to "Lady Armytage" in London franked (for the 9d rate "Via Marseilles" from the Far East) with G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' (Strip of 3 - slight horiz. bend - and 2 singles) + 4d Rose-Carmine (slight rub) all most exceptionally tied by fair to fine strikes of an unrecorded(?) Intaglio "OFFICER IN CHARGE OF COMMUNICATIONS/[Crown]" Bagseal, the only usage that we have recorded, and there is a very fine red London backstamp (27 Sept. 1859). The bottom left of the address is initialled "G.J.A.", the addressee's son, who was at the time serving as a Midshipman on the 17-gun sloop H.M.S. 'Cruiser' which is known to have been at or near Shanghai/Peking from April to Sept. 1859. [Armytage was seriously wounded in the Battle of Pei-Ho near Peking on 28 June 1859, and mentioned in despatches.] This letter was carried on the P&O ships Formosa, Cadiz, Candia & Valetta reaching Marseilles on 25 Sept. (see Kirk), which fits with the London backstamp; it may have been posted at Hong Kong (7 Aug.) or Shanghai (2 Aug.). The cancellation was presumably used in error for a Mailboat Numeral; the "Officer in Charge of Communications" was the Naval Officer in charge of a Post Office Company. Important cover with a Unique(?) cancellation. [With relevant historical research notes.]
