Click to view full image... INDIA - CALCUTTA TO MADEIRA; 10 July 1801 EL bearing London transit 'FOREIGN OFFICE/1802' red circle & erasure mark (Willcocks & Jay Nos L1016 & L1042) and near fine black 'LISBOA'. Filing note for receipt 22 Mar. 1802 during the first British Occupation of Madeira (1801-02), a 'friendly' occupation designed to prevent French/Spanish invasion. Content inquiring after wine not received ".....possibly [due] to the non arrival of ships." Interesting item that took eight months to be delivered, no doubt demonstrating the chaos in the mail system during the post War of the Oranges period. Early mails to Portugal are rarely seen and those having postmarks applied in Portugal, especially during time of conflict, are extremely rare. Some very slight toning, else fine.

WITH HAND-COLOURED HEADING INSIDE; 13 July 1833 E (side-flaps & part contents removed, toned externally, but the significant contents still present) from "Patna" to London "By the [Ship] Patriot King" with a partly fine black encircled "Patna/Post/Paid [10as]" on the flap, beside a very rare red boxed "INDIA LETTER/MILFORD" [Rob.In.a; only one other example recorded in this colour - sold in Cavendish's May 2002 auction, lot 87; realised £2,070] - struck over the Patna P.O.'s light manuscript date - and having a superb hand-drawn watercoloured comic drawing of a "Granny" in military pose with child playing a drum! Doubly unique; a very rare pre-1840 Pictorial cover, and a very rare India Letter mark. [See Robertson p.E.212B where he records the other red example.]

Initially rated '1/-' and re-rated '2/8'(d) Contents refer to the heat, the countryside and his wish to go to the mountains in the summer. Click to view full image... INDIA - FIRST AFGHAN WAR PERIOD - BENARES to EDINBURGH with HISTORICAL CONTENT; 17 Jan. 1842 EL bearing poor red oval-framed Bombay 'INDIA' mark on the front and boxed 'BENARES/1842January/Paid12as' (unrecorded by Giles in this form), London & Edinburgh 15 & 16 March 1842 c.d.s.'s on rear. Interesting narrative "...Sir Alex[ander] Burnes & several of our officers actually married Afghan women" and "Our news from Cabul is still very unauthentic & the surrender of Macnaughton [sic] is still I am sorry to say uncertain" shows the writer to be unaware that Burnes had been killed on 2 Nov & Macnaghton assassinated on 21 Dec. 1841. Writer also appears to be unaware of the massacre of Elphinstone's entire command of 4500 men plus 12000 civilians earlier in January during the disastrous retreat from Kabul that commenced on 6th of that month. Rare historical account. Fine condition, apart from some slight fading of the contents.
