Click to view full image... BRAZIL - 'IMPOSSIBLE 450 REIS RATE' COVER TO FRANCE WITH 1861 430r NUMERAL + 1866 20r D PEDRO; Attractive 26/28 June 1870 merchants' env. (firm's imprint and blue oval cachet on the front) to France "PR. [S.S.] Aconcagua" with 1861 430r Yellow Numeral (good to very wide margins) and 1866 D Pedro 20r both tied by v. fine Rio Cork cancels with matching fine small 2-ring "RIO DE JANEIRO" cds and red boxed "PD" alongside; also with a mainly very fine rare 2-ring "LIGNE J/PAQ. FR. No.4" 5 July cds (Salles 1.063; 2nd Period Ligne J, but not apparently recorded with code 4) also on the front. There are backstamps of Bordeaux & Podensac (both 29 July). This 450r rate is not recorded (the single rate was 280r and the double rate 580r at this date), but this cover is ex M.A. Ferreira - Nov. 1994 Christies NY (est. US $2,000-$2,500) - and there was second similar 450r-rate cover in that collection, dated Nov. 1871 with this same rate and franking routed via Calais. [With 1963 RPS certificate of genuineness; submitted by Fred Rich.] The most likely explanation for this unusual rate (and the rare routing by the private ship SS Aconcagua) with the rare J4 Ligne J cds, is that there was a Late Fee rate of 170r for a Supplementary Mail (similar to that recorded for GB mails to Brazil via Lisbon in August 1870); the fact that this letter reached France less than two weeks after the start of the Franco-Prussian War may also be significant (the owners of the SS Aconcagua were Bordes & Co. and they dealt, amongst other things, in gunpowder...). Fascinating item worthy of further research, but estimated low because of the mysterious 450r rate. [Ex Peter Brack.]
