Click to view full image... VICTORIA - GOLD-RUSH COVER FROM A NEGRO MINER AT "BENDIGO. LONG GULLY" TO HIS WIFE IN THE U.S.; Complete 7 Dec. 1855 EL (toning) from "James R. Davis" (a negro from New Bedford) to USA with 6d Orange (some margins) tied by a very fine Sandhurst "5/V" oval with large part matching oval d.s. (8 Dec.) alongside with "NEW-YORK/SHIP/5cts" transit cds (4 Apr.) nearby; carried by the bullion-carrying ship 'Aura' direct from Melbourne. Good contents (full typed transcript) inc.; "...I am trying my luck in the quartz, which I am now 22 feet in the slid rock. I have been in it ninety days. I have spent £50 in this claim...". Davis did not make a million, but he later became a successful sea captain. Rare letter from a negro miner at the Bendigo diggings.
