  A QSA BAR RELIEF OF KIMBERLEY TO THE R HORSE GUARDS. A ghost dated Queens South Africa medal with single bar, Relief of Kimberley. Named officially in impressed lettering to 488 Tpr: F: Robins, R.H.Gds: The Royal Horse Guards were part of the Household Cavalry Composite Regiment. It confirms on the roll that Trooper Robins was only in receipt of this single bar. mounted for wear with a spine bar locking the medal from top to bottom, presumably by a Jeweller. Whilst the unit has several single bar (Cape Colony) medals issued, only Tpr Robins and one other man received the single bar, Relief Of Kimberley. (15th February 1900) £80-120

A silver/gilt Primo of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes with Grand Middlesex Banner below. Inscribed on the reverse, Presented to H B Bowtell Bond of Friendship Lodge 302 12th Jan 1956. 3. A silver gilt Grand Middlesex Banner with Kangaroo centre medal inscribed on the reverse, Presented to Primo H B Bowtell 1957. (Bond of friendship lodge 302 top bar). 4. Inscribed on the reverse This Order of Merit and Honour of Knighthood was conferred upon Primo H B Bowtell by the members of The Bond of Friendship Lodge 302 as a mark of respect for his services In The Cause of Buffaloism & their regard and esteem FOR HIM AS A MAN 21st July 1960. Click to view full image... A DOUBLE SHAFT POND AND A KRUGER PENNY. A gold South African Pond with twin wagon shafts, dated 1892, with Designers initial O S below the bust. The Voortrekkers were displeased with this coin for the reason that their Wagons were only single shafts. Also that the initials OS (Otto Schultz) It was the South Afrikaans word for Ox or Oxen. This coin was quickly withdrawn from circulation, by the Republic. Also an 1898 Kruger Penny, this time with single wagon shaft reverse. (2) See Illustration £300-500

  BRASS BRADFORD'S ARMY MEDALS etc A quantity of over 60 medals produced to honour the 26,000+ men who went to war, 1914 onwards from Bradford. 22mm in diameter with standing soldiers reverse. In Honour of Bradfords Sons who so nobly responded and fought for King Home & Country in the Great European War commencing 4th August 1914.   A 24th IMPERIAL YEOMANRY Q M Sgt's MEDAL. A four bar Queens South Africa medal named to 3959 Q M Sgt G F Robey, 24th Coy Imp Yeo. Bars Cape Colony-Orange Free State-Transvaal-South Africa 1901. The Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry were part of the 8th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry serving in the South African War 1899-1902. The battalion was formed in 1900, Godfrey Francis Robey was then listed as a Private. They arrived in South Africa on the 5th March 1900. the medal rolls confirm this entitlement. £100-150

Click to view full image... A MILITARY CROSS GROUP OF SIX MEDALS TO COL J E GIBBS MC C GDS. A framed and mounted group consisting of a Military Cross engraved on the reverse Captain J E Gibbs (GV). Queens South Africa medal with three bars, Cape Colony-South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. Named in official engraved style to Lieut J E Gibbs Coldstm Gds. 1914 Star with 5th August- 22nd November clasp, named to Capt J E Gibbs C.Gds. British War & Victory medals named to Capt J E Gibbs. 1911 Coronation medal unnamed as issued, the group mounted for wear. Above the medals are a matching group of miniatures, over which is a silver/enamel Coldstream Guards Badge. John Evelyn Gibbs was born at Tyntesfield in December 1879 one of the sons of Anthony Gibbs and Janet Louise Merivale Gibbs. Among his siblings were Brig Lancelot Merivale Gibbs DSO. MC & Bar. (see Lawrences sale of November 1914 lot 1035). Capt Eustace Lyle Gibbs MC & Bar. Lt Col William Gibbs, Major Anthony Hubert Gibbs also George Abraham Gibbs 1st Baron Wraxall. Having served in the Boer War with the Coldstream Guards, from 1908 until 1912 he served as ADC to the Viceroy/Governor of India. In August 1914 he went to France with his Regiment and fought in every action with them until posted missing 22/11/1914. He was later confirmed as a Prisoner of War, held by the Germans until 1918 when he was interred in Holland. Repatriated in January 1919, he returned to his Regiment. In September 1919 he married into the Royal Family, Lady Helena Frances Augusta Cambridge (formerly a Princess of Teck) The daughter of Sir Adolphus Charles Cambridge (1st Marquess) born Adolphus Charles Alexander Albert Edward George Philip Louis Ladislaus Von Teck. In 1917 the Germanic names were divested by the Royal Family and the Von Teck's. His daughter was born at Grosvenor House London 23rd October 1899. She was 19 years old when she married Major Temp Lt Colonel Gibbs at Windsor Castle. She died in her sisters home at Badminton House, having no issue and surviving her husband by 37 years. 22nd December 1969. ( Her sister was Mary Duchess of Beaufort, her brother Lord Frederick Cambridge). His London Gazette date for the Military Cross was January 30th 1920. Under Army Order 193 of 1919. Returned Prisoners of War (No Citation) In 1930 Colonel J E Gibbs MC was the Colonel of the Coldstream Guards, also commanding the 3rd London Infantry Brigade. Colonel John Evelyn Gibbs died at Escourt Grange. Tetbury. Glos. 11th October 1932. With the medals is an original copy of the Guards Order of Service at St Pauls Cathedral 5th February 1919. In the Lawrences January Book Sale in January 2015, lot 2919 was his diary/log of his time in India. 1907-1909. Lot 2926 was his diary log of his travels in South America 1912-1913 and afterwards, including Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Peru. The family interests after Guano had faltered was in Soda for Munitions. Thence homewards by the Panama Canal and the USA. Both had many photographs taken by him in his travels, placed into the journals. See Illustration £1800-2200

A Meritorius Service Medal GV issue, named to 703008 Sjt L M L Gould,102/2.C. Ont R. An unnamed Belgian Croix de Guerre awarded to Sjt Gould. Ribbon bar for parade wear present. 703008 Sjt Leonard (Mc L) Gould was awarded the MSM in the London Gazette of 3/6/1919 Page 6913. (Note initials were correctly stated) Leonard McLeod Gould the son of the late Rev Joseph Gould of Repton School, was born on the 25th July 1878. Educated at Repton and Caius College Cambridge BA 1900. Served in the 102nd Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force from August 1916 until April 1919. Both MSM and Belgian Croix de Guerre confirmed in the Repton War Services. Died the 20th March 1928. See Illustration £400-600

Click to view full image... A MINIATURE NAVAL GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL bar BOADECIA 1810. An contemporary Naval General Service miniature medal with bar Boadecia 18 Sep 1810 affixed. Awarded for the action that took place in the Indian Ocean between British and French Ships. It was Admiral Josias Rowley's flagship HMS Boadecia's arrival that rescued Gordon and HMS Ceylon from their captivity, having struck his colours after a hard fought action. The French then surrendered to Rowley, not attempting after that to defend the Ile de France. See Illustration £200-300

The Baden Order of the Zahringen Lion, civil issue. An old family tree document detailing the families and lineage of the Edler Von Hoffman's. Another in German confirming his right to the title etc. Another original document Freidrich von Gottes Gnaden, Grofsherzog von Baden, Herzog von Zahringen. Frederick the ruler of Baden's award document to Dr Hugo Von Hoffman. A leading specialist in the Eye Treatment and Care fields, during the 19thC. One of four Von Hoffman brothers who became doctors in various branches of medicine. The family had connections in both Baden Baden and Wiesbaden. The document has notations and jotting's from a family member, over the years. Often birth and death are fatefully recorded. The cased Crown of Italy 4th Class or Commander of the order, is in extremely good condition, with a rosette on the ribbon. E Gardino suco=D Cravanzola-Gioielliere-Roma in the lid. The Lion of Zahringen Order is lacking its case, though again in extremely good condition, with no enamel loss or damage evident. A set of 18ct cufflinks with the initials E V H on the outer faces, the family crest on the others.. An 18ct (750) marked Signet Ring/seal with again the family crest in the face. A mythical beast holding a flaming torch. English markings to both cufflinks and ring with both hallmarks and makers marks. Dr Hoffman was a well known and respected Eye Surgeon-Specialist, who gave talks and advice to other surgeons in europe. He died in 1934 according to the notations by his entry in the family tree document, which takes the family back to the late 17thC. Various spellings including Edle occur throughout the lineage document. See Illustrations £800-1000

  AN ARMY OF INDIA MEDAL. An Army of India medal with two bars, Capture of Deig and Battle of Deig. Purchased from Baldwins in 1978, the naming is almost completely erased. The medal may be the one won by Alexander Main of the 76th Foot, from what is legible on the rim. In 1924 the medal was in the possession of Miss M G Main of Wimborne Dorset, a descendant of Alex Main. £200-300

  AN OFFICERS CRIMEA WAR PAIR. Single bar Crimea medal to Lt C W Willis 33rd Foot, engraved naming in upright capitals, Chas Whately Willis Lt 33rd Regt 1855-56. Turkish Crimea, English type, unnamed as issued. Purchased from Liverpool Coin & Medal Co 1981. Lt Willis was present for the attack on the Redan in June 1855, he was also present at the second attempt to capture it in September 1855. He later served in Mauritius in 1857. With the Grenadier Company he served in India in the Mutiny suppressing the Mutineers. He served at Sholopar, Deesa, and Baneah. The Regiment never applied for a Mutiny Medal, though he served in the Field Force that besieged and occupied Dwarka. £200-300

  AN OFFICERS ABYSSINIAN WAR MEDAL. Named in raised letters on the reverse, to Ensign D W K Barr H M 33rd Regt. Purchased from Spinks June 1980. Interestingly the naming is off centre, possibly due to the disc turning when struck. Ensign Barr was on the strength of the 33rd Regt attached from the Staff Corps India, confirmed by the roll. David William Keith Barr was born 29th November 1846, the son of Lt General Henry James Barr, Bombay Staff Corps. Commissioned Ensign on the 20th Sept 1864, Lt 22 july 1868, after his return to India from the Abyssinian War. He was promoted to Captain in 1876, twelve years to the day from becoming an Ensign. From 1881 until 1887 He was Political Agent and Superintendent Rewah, promoted Major 20th September 1884. In 1888 He became Resident at Gwalior whence he remained until 1892. Promoted to Lt Col 20th September 1890, whilst at this post. He then served in Kashmir for two years. From 1894-1900 he served in Central India as the Governor Generals Agent. From 1900-1905 He was Resident at Hyderabad and was made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the Star of India. Dating from the 26th June 1902. In 1905 He became a member of the Viceroys Council of India. £300-400
