There were six 'Smith' surnames in the 2nd W R Regt, one A, three F's and two William's. Purchased from Donald Hall in 1978. It was originally with a 5 Bar QSA, DWR Mounted Infantry. £280-320

Click to view full image... A MILITARY MEDAL GROUP OF THREE TO THE 9th LONDON REGIMENT. A George V Military Medal named to 395453 Pte C Buchanan 9/Lond R. British War & Victory Medals named to 395453 Pte C Buchanan 9-Lond.R. Pte Charles Buchanan (the father of Desmond Buchanan MBE) served in France & Flanders with the 9th London Regiment. Medal Index Card record is sparse and confirms his entitlement to a pair only. The Queen VIctorias Rifles (County of London Regiment), were part of the 3rd London Brigade (Territorials). Having taken many casualties through the war years, 1st & 2nd Battalions were amalgamated in 1918. They also served with the 56th London Division. After the war Charles Buchanan served in the RAF as a carpenter. He died of Pnuemonia in February 1936 whilst serving in the Sudan, aged 37 years at Albara Civil Hospital. The Certifying Medical Officer was by coincidence an R U Buchanan. His award of the Military Medal appeared in the London Gazette Supp 4134 on the 29/3/1919. Born in 1899 he would have been 18 years old when he was put forward for an act of gallantry in 1918. His home town is given as Bournemouth. On the 27th April 1917 Charles Buchanan enlisted into the 9th London Regt. He was awarded the Military Medal whilst acting as a Stretcher Bearer, (by family provenance). He transferred to the reserve in February 1919. In February 1920 he enlisted into the RAF as a carpenter/aircraftsman. In the same year he married Annie May Gubby. After service at Calshot, Duxford and Farnborough he went to Aden with 4 Sqdn in 1929. Then Egypt with 8 Sqdn, then to the Sudan where he was to be buried in 1936. With copied details and photograph album also loose photos. Consisting of Planes, Bases and natives also the family of the recipient. Iran-Iraq and Afghanistan are among the never to be repeated scenes of service in the RAF, during the inter war years in the empire. Many have names or notations written on the reverse.   THE PAIR & DEFENCE MEDAL TO FREDERICK BETTERIDGE (HAMPS.R) A British War & Victory medal pair mounted for wear, named to 42253 Pte F J Betteridge Hamp R. Frederick J Betteridge was awarded his Gt War medals for service in France & Flanders. After the war he went to Canada then back to England to serve in the Hampshire Constabulary, from 1925. In 1926 he married Ethel Mary Dovey. He was one of the first Motorcycle Policemen in the Wilts Constabulary. During his career he was to guard King George and the Queen, also the King of Spain in exile. He retired with the rank of Superintendent in 1948, after service in the Control Commission for Germany 1946-48. This was for the de- Nazification period in Oberhausen. Born 23/10/1898 at Box Wiltshire, he died in Bristol 24/05/1985. With original postcard photographs and career details of the recipient. £50-70

A QEII Civil issue MBE, 1939/45 & France - Germany Stars, War Medal, 1977 Queens Jubilee Medal, Police Exemplary Service Medal named to Chief Inspector Desmond C Buchanan. After serving in the Grenadier Guards then the Guards Armoured Division, during the Invasion and Surrender of German Forces, he took part in the Victory Parade in Berlin. Booklets issued for Brussels 1945 and Farewell to Armour Parade 9th June 1945, also a copy of the book The Guards Armoured Division 1941-1945 (Rosse & Hill) are with the medals. The Division officially landed in France on the 26th June 1944. The Normandy Breakout and Falaise, Nijmegen Bridge etc, are all part of their history. The 490 Miles in 25 days covered by the Division, including the Seine to the Somme's 89 miles(some sources state 75 mls) overnight 30/31st August 1944, has gone down in Armoured Brigade History. The losses on the attempt to get to the American Airborne Troops at Nijmegen Bridgehead, were very heavy. The son of Charles Buchanan MM and son in law of Frank J Betteridge, he was born at Chilbolton Hants, 1/7/1925. Leaving school he joined up aged 18 into the Grenadier Guards, served as a Gun Carrier Wireless Operator from August 1943. (Bren Gun Carrier)? No 2624406, landing on D Day +5. His was the first Gun Carrier into Brussels after the liberation of the city. His carrier was also involved with the Berlin Victory Parade. It is possible that he met his future father in law and his daughter Josephine Mary Betteridge in Germany. They married in 1950. He was in the Somerset then Avon & Somerset Constabulary, until he retired with the rank of Chief Inspector in 1982, after some 30 years service. With original photographs and copied career details.   A HMS QUANTOCK LSGC GROUP OF SIX MEDALS. 1939/45, Atlantic & Burma Stars, Defence & War medals. Long Service Good Conduct George VI named to J.112562 F C Petty.C.P.O. HMS Quantock. A Hunt Class Escort Destroyer launched in 1940 which saw service in North Africa, the Atlantic, Sicily, Salerno and the Adriatic. On many convoys and beach landings, she was the first of her name. After the war she was sold to the Ecuador Navy and renamed Presidento Alfaro. Scrapped in 1978. £80-100
